Infinity Reference 2 Anyone

I have a mint pair of these little bookshelf speakers. Bought form an older gentleman who was the original owner. He thinks they are about 25 years old. I must say they sound pretty good. There is very little information on them. Anyone know the specs and when they were built. Anyone else have a pair and if so, what is your opinion of them.

Due to Infinity's propensity to re-use names, your question is not as easy to answer as you might think. However, based on your description of these as a bookshelf speaker, I believe the following information from the Infinity website applies:

Reference 2

2-Way 6-1/2" Bookshelf Speaker. Co-injected woofer cones give a for smooth and natural sound presentation. Bass Driver 6-1/2". High Frequency Driver 1/2". Dimensions HxWxD 13" x 7 1/2" x 11 1/4".

Specs:
Frequency Response 50Hz - 20kHz
Sensitivity 89dB (2.83 volts/1 meter)
Impedance 8 ohms
Output Level MAX - 106dB spl
Recommended Power Amplifier Range 15 - 100 watts
Woofer 6.5" (160mm) co-injected
Tweeter 0.5" (12mm) Polycarbonate

These were made in the 90's, so not quite 25 years old, but getting there.

They are definitely Reference two. Nice little speakers with good sound.

I also have the First (black) pictured Reference 2 speakers.
I was using them as surrounds with my Kappa 7.2 series 2 Fronts.

I think you scored. They're really solidly-built, with decent inside wiring and the crossover components hot-glued to the PC board and to the terminal cup.

Refoaming the surrounds is also very easy, if you have to do that at some point.

I have a pair of reference two's and Fours and they are very nice. If you replace the foam surrounds do NOT use those cheap generic surrounds as they are too stiff for proper driver movement and will be disappointing. Get them from an authorised Infinity warranty/service dealer. The genuine surrounds are lighter, much more flexible and work much better for the acoustic suspension design and the driver motor. This holds true for all the infinity's. Stay away from the generic surrounds, they are awful. I have friend who replaced his surrounds on a pair of reference six's with generic surrounds and it ruined the sound compared to the originals.

Hey, a Lazarus thread. This thread is from 2008, so.... I haven't had those speakers in a decade. First, they were blown up in a drunken stupor with a Sansui G6700, and later were finished off by a large forest fire that burned my house to the ground with all my stuff inside. I recall they sounded pretty good for what they are.
