I think it matters very little in the grand scheme whether the surounds are on the front or back. I've done quite a few over the years and even went so far as to compare both ways on the same woofers and couldn't hear any difference.
That may be so, but if you sweep the driver when done, you'll see the difference. What does that do to system and cabinet response? Go figure, but 9 times out of 10, it'll be different. Perceivable aurally? Only your hair dresser knows for sure.
When I do restoration work, I make every effort, and take advantage of every resource I can, to restore the piece I am working on to as close as possible to specs.
I don't obsess in the extreme, like the JBL PURISTS that insist that anything less than a complete RECONE job is heresy, but I do strive for accuracy.
Information on the details is fairly easy to come by nowadays, and THAT'S where God is.
Changing the ultimate throw of a bass transducer willy-nilly is a "mod". The driver is no longer original.
I personally only know one guy capable of that sort of thing, Bill LeGall.
Otherwise, I stick to the "stock" design.
