Ugh, it's not that I want to buy nice Infinity speakers asap, but sometimes deals come whether you're ready or not. I am going to audition a pair of Renaissance 80 speakers tomorrow, and possibly the 90 series later on as well.

I'll try my best to get me as well informed as possible, but if people can advice me on possible pitfalls or what to watch out for with these speaker series because of the limited time available, that would be greatly appreciated. Links are welcome too.

As for the audition itself, I have a umik-1 at my disposal, so I e.g. compare the frequency response of 1 speaker and compare them to the other in the same set, if this is worth doing. I do not have the microphone since long so my experience with it (and REW) is limited. I also have a multimeter if necessary, but if the connections are soldered like the kappa then this is perhaps not useful.

Well the 90's are sold, so that leaves the 80's for tomorrow. I worked my way through the forum and found out that the emit's can have a tendency to be slightly wavy, but the emim's can be quite straight. I'll check the surround on the woofers, though I believe these are made of rubber. And the foam on the back. If anyone has something to add, please do.
 
There’s a lot of members here to help with those speakers. I’ve never heard myself but would like to some day. Do u listen to your 8.1s for movies or music also.
 
I use (for now) only two main speakers for everything, these now being the 8.1's. But my preference is to have speakers which do well with music.

Well I have pulled the trigger on the Ren 80's with some doubts in mind while driving them to their new home. The cabinets are a little scuffed, the spikes were missing. One woofer surround has partly come loose. One emim sounded a little muffled to me but I have to make certain of that, I thought maybe some sort of foam or other soft tissue present form the front structure was touching the diaphragm. The foam in the back is disintegrating, but that I expected.The emit's have more scuffs en dents than I liked but.....

OMG, I am completely blown away with the sound they produce. Even with the aforementioned flaws the clarity and detail coming from the emit's but especially the emim's is so amazing, I cannot stress this enough. And the soundstage, I had some difficulty grasping that concept but these speakers just roll out the red carpet for me. I just placed them quickly in my living room, not really paying attention to their placements, no corrections applied, and everything just fell into place. The placements of the instruments, the clarity and vibrations of the cymbals, strings, the piano, the voices and many more; I just sat there with a huge grin. I have never, ever, enjoyed classical music more then at this moment in time. The sound is just so encompassing. I was impressed by the 8.1's but this just seems like a whole other level.

I have no acceptable knowledge of amp's yet, I just ran them on my Sony receiver (however good or bad that is), but their performance stunned me nonetheless.

I'm sure that when I've cooled down a bit there will be some negative points. I have not really paid attention to bass. It is apparent that they do need more (spare) power than my receiver can provide. I'll have to check the crossovers and do some repairs. But for the moment I am just..so satisfied with the sound they produce. Thank you AK for showing me the Infinity world and bringing me this wonderful sound.
 
fix the woofer before you play them any more.

It's an oddball size, and Watkins does not make a replacement any longer.

Wait till you hear how resolving they are with a better signal chain. (amplifier)

Enjoy! I listen to my 90's every day. Bought them from a buddy who garbage picked them, and drove them right over to my house. I paid $50. and gave him a Magnavox Tube Amp. that was worth a couple hundred.
 
Hello fellow Infinity fans

I have a really nice set of QLS 2's that I truly love
I recently came across a set of Ren 80's that the guy wanted a 1000 for, cabinets are in great shape, woofers looked to be in great shape
but I did notice one emim had a tear in it and was very wavy so after a lot of discussion and haggling i bought them for 200
Got them home and started checking everything. All was good except for the suspected emim
found an emim of the e word and bought it for another 200
Put the emim in after receiving it and all I can say is I am impressed
I am currently running them on a Luxman L85v and the combination is extraordinary
The Quantums are running on a Luxman CO2 feeding a Yamaha MX 600u on the bottom and a Luxman Mo2 on top
Soon I will hook the Rens up in that setup but I have to say I was not expecting what I am getting out of the Rens
I read a lot of articles about them and everyone had good things to say but boy for 400 they are a hell of set of speakers and look damn fine doing it
I will say I believe they sound better with the front grills on them it appears they were intended to play that way

Grilles on, huh? I just bought a really rough pair for $40. If all the drivers work, I’ll rework the cabinets, but they came without grilles.
