Infinity: Replacement for 12 inch Watkins woofers

Hi
I got a pair of great Quantum 5s. The Emit Tweeter and the Woofer are in great shape, but the previous owner changed the Watkins woofers to some other cheap 12 inch woofers.

Questions:
  1. What is the best replacement without breaking the bank?
  2. Can I use higher efficiency woofers, so I can drive with my 30 w tube amps?

Can anyone please help / provide links?

I can't help you with the replacement.

But... if you get a more efficient woofer then all you will hear is bass. If that is what you want you are in business. The rest of the speaker system has either a similar efficiency to the Watkins woofers or is padded to match the output/efficiency of the Watkins woofer.

Watkins is makin brand new replacement woofers that fit your speakers, they are somewhat pricey....I would not use any other woofer than the original. They are dual voice coil and the xover is specifically designed for them. If price is a concern try the bay used watkins come up often...
 
I'd just save up $$ a bit longer, until I could afford the Watkins ones - new or used. They're probably the only ones that will really give you the original-equivalent sound, and will do so without major crossover mods. In the meantime, try EQing things to get the best sound you can from what is in there now.
 
Just keep an eye on Ebay as the Quantum/Watkins woofers seem to come up every so often. As a matter of fact, there's a pair listed right now....typically, you pay for them, though. There may be different versions that I'm not aware of so maybe some of the Infinity Quantum experts will chime in. I own a pair of Quantum 3's but I don't know if that DVC woofer works in the 5's or not. I'd rather have the originals (or the new versions) as I would a replacement of another type.
 
Thanks all for the responses! They do sound great and I am sure that they will sound even better with the right woofers. I will post pics soon.
 
I used Dayton st305-8 12" seriesII from parts express in my Kappa8's.. They worked fine and sound good.. as good as new?? but they worked after a botched attempt at refoaming. I may pick up the real thing and try refoaming again. What do you all think??
