Infinity RS 325 install foam or rubber surrounds new caps or not.

I scored a mint pair of RS 325's today 60 bucks today. Of coarse the surrounds are toast. I knew that when I bought them. I intend on putting rubber surrounds in but my buddy who has and opinion on everything said they came with foam rubber may effect the compliance too much. He's right as often as the broken clock but I thought I'd see what the studio audience says.

I'm sure the caps have lost some of their effectiveness but is new ones really going to make a truly noticeable difference. If they were from the 60's or 70's they get yanked but fro the 90's eh IDK?

Your buddy is correct, in that it's best to stick with the original foam material. But, even then, you need to find foam with the correct compliance. Search eBay, for AK member "looneytune2001". He can get you the correct foam (none mine).

Oh yea, new capacitors (poly or NPE) can make a difference. Especially in older speakers. Heck, I upgraded capacitors in a new set of speakers, using better Bennic NPE caps, with film and foil bypass caps, and heard a nice difference.

I am with you on better caps are always a good thing. I kind of went overboard on a pair of KLH 17's that I'm just putting the finishing touches on. The original crossover had crappy little caps and nothing at all crossover wise for driver. I added a coil and cap set pulled from a definitive crossover. As for the surrounds, the foam ones I have are correct the rubber are a bit stouter. Being their ported I think stouter isn't necessarily a bad thing. If they were sealed I'd be singing a different tune. Even though they're mint, cause they are I'm selling them. I'm the guy who drives a beater because if it gets another scratch or ding I don't care. Same goes for speakers. I have a pair of 2 way Atlantis cabinets (privet label Dayton's Sold by Team Electronics) that I bought 35 years ago and have replace the guts 10 times or more in. They currently have 8'' Kevlar drivers from and unknown model from KLH and ancient SEAS horns also of and unknown origin. And as their crossovers a resistor and cap on the horn and not much more on the driver. Those are the garage pair I use. The LR pair are AR 4x that only the GF and the pets listen too.

Once I get the surrounds on I am going to stick a pair of RS 225 tweeters in them just to see if they sound better than the polycell ones do. I'll put the old ones back when I sell them I've just heard so much made about the shortcomings of the polycell's I just want to hear it for myself.
 
How did you replace the foam on these? The foam is on the backside of the cone and I'm not sure the best way to glue the foam to them when it's tricky enough just to get the foam behind the cone... Don't want to make a big mess, apparently I picked the wrong speaker for my first refoam job :dunno:

@StimpyWan Unless I was a duntz with my searching I don’t think that seller is active anymore. Any updated recommendation on getting the correct surrounds for the RS325?
