could not resist and bought a pair of infinity rs-4001 speakers from thrift store at $25.....they will need a refoam. I'd use this in a bedroom setting for listening at moderate levels from dire straits to clapton to taj mahal.....based on your experience would these be worth the effort to refoam for such listening pleasure or should i return in hopes for better three way speakers of similar size ? advice ?

If they're in decent condition, refoam the woofers and see what you think. I think they'll be well worth it. I have the smaller RS2001 in the bedroom on my Sansui G-6000

In case you don't have them yet, here's the specs on yours:
Introduced: 1989
Dimensions: 57 x 29 x 24 cm
Weight: 12 kg
Bass: 1 x 20 cm
Mids: 1 x Polyspherit
Highs: 1 x Polyspherit
Suggested for amplifiers with: 25-125 Watts per channel
Frequency range: 44 Hz - 22 kHz
Crossover frequencies: 600 Hz, 4000 Hz
Suggested price (pair): $ 578

Definitely worth a refoam, and should sound pretty nice. If you find you don't like them later on, you should be able to sell them and at least get your investment back.

I'd be interested what you think about them if you decide to refoam! There is a pair at a speaker repair shop here in MN asking price $175. I've been trying to talk my sister(I keep telling her that they would be a great gift for her fiance):naughty: into getting them! I just really like Infinity! They remind me of the RS 6's in appearance. I would say you got a pretty good deal on them although they do need the refoam.

Refoam them. They are a little light in bass, but sound very good for $25 plus a refoam. I bought mine new for quite a bit more than that and I still enjoy them, although mine are kind of beat up. They are not super loud but they are very clear. I don't ever see the polyspeherite domes on e-bay, so don't cook them.

Thanks for the input folks !

I'm in. My first re-foam job, cool.

So, for the foam surrounds should i just do a simple search or is there a specific site for infinity surrounds ? Any surround type's i should stay away from....such as material make up, or other ??? or are all surround replacement quality/material basically the same ?

I had good luck with Speaker Exchange for a set of different infinity surrounds.

I think if you tell them the model of the speaker they can send you the correct surround.

Picked up a similar pair at the local SA store discounted to $18. Boxes were in great condition. Another $8 for some new foam surrounds, a day's work cleaning and gluing and they sound great. Nice crisp highs and mids, good tight bass. Really shine with classic jazz and symphonic music, but Pandora streaming sounds good too. Easily fill my living room powered by vintage Marantz tuner.

I've got a pair of 2001's and the 5001's. The 2001's are awesome small room speakers, sounding way above their "pay grade'.
The 5001's sound kind of laid back, they are not very efficient, needing some power to make them come to life, BUT THEY DO.:music:
Very easy to listen to, not tiring at all.
I haven't tried them in my 5.1 system as the mains, :dunno:?

my two cents Stu

Be careful your paint doesn't crinkle the vinyl covering.
