Infinity RS-5b vs. JBL L96

I have never heard either of these speakers, but I am buying a pair of JBL L96's in a week or so and I have an opportunity to pick up the Infinity speakers now. Would I be wasting my time with the Infinity's? It wouldn't kill me to own both pairs. I am really curious how those famous Emit tweeters sound against the titanium tweeters in the L96's.

Which do you think are the superior pair? Am I way out of line to think that the RS-5b are in the same class as the L96?

If you are buying a pair of L96, no need to think about the RS-5b as the L96 is a better all around performance-wise.
However you'd perhaps enjoy the RS-4b and definitely the RSIII a/b over the L96. IMHO.

The L96 had the regular 044 tweeter (not the Ti) I believe. Just FWIW. Outstanding loudspeaker. But why not get both and keep them, or sell the ones you like less?

Yep, no titanium in the L96 Deltas. Just "dispersion" applied aluminum over phenolic diaphragm. Actually a very nice sounding tweeter.

That's right. I remember reading that from an old thread I made about L96's. Pardon my ignorance. I am probably going to grab the Infinity's tomorrow. Curiosity is killing me. :)

Not sure how you came to that conclusion from the above posts:)
Have Fun!

I was referring to the tweeter not being Ti. Is that what you mean, tubed?

I think the tweeter, compared to the Ti, on the l96 is not a hindrance but the RS4b and better yet the RSIIIa/b is preferable to the RS5b and the L96 which is a fine sounding speaker.

I'd love to try those better Infinity's, but right now there's a pair of 5b's in great condition with original stands for a great price. I'm just thinking about picking them up to play around a little. Would you say it's a good place to start to see if I like the Infinity sound with the rest of my stereo?

My commentary was in regard to that you were going to acquire the L96s which I felt were a better sounding speaker than the RS5b.
I guess if the price is right for the Infinitys you can sell whichever pair you don't prefer and keep the precious speaker stands. A win win :)

Well I passed. The owner had a different idea of "great" condition. He was also obviously lying about a "professional refoam". People suck sometimes.
