Infinity RS 7b

Hi. I just picked up a pair of these. Actually I was kind of on the rebound from a pair of Pioneer speakers I researched before I pulled the trigger, and then they were gone when I finally made it back. So I pulled the trigger on these, and now I'm asking questions. But a newer pair of speakers will be nice, too. What's the opinion on these speakers, and where can you get refoam kits? Thanks.

I've not heard these particular speakers, but I own a pair of big brothers to these (RS-IIIb's) and I've also owned RS-4b's. The 7b's should sound similar to these bigger speakers, as they use the same EMIT tweeter and the same 8" woofer as the 4b's. The only major difference is in the midrange driver: the 7b uses a 4" cone mid driver, while the bigger brothers use Infinity's Polydome. I think the only thing the 7b's may give up to the bigger models is in the bass department, but then not by much. According to the Infinity Classics website, the 7b's extend down to 45 Hz, the 4b's to 40 Hz, and the IIIb's to 35 Hz, so they aren't giving up a whole lot in the bass region. If the 7b's are anything like other Infinity's of this same vintage, the bass that is there will be tight, fast, and tuneful.

Thank you Tedrick. Even with the the woofer foam flapping in the breeze, I can tell there's something up with these speakers. If the tweeters are working at all are they OK? I heard some hissy sounds but it was on a recording with a big chorus and orchestra, it could be real ambient noise I wasn't noticing before.

FoolForARadio,
Yes, it is almost always a working fine or dead situation. The only abnormaly that one could develop is a vibration if loose. Congrats on those. The hissing more than likely is the tweeter passing on source hiss that it hears, not that it is producing.

What's the difference between the RS 7 (which I can see on the German site) and the 7b? Will the 4" foam surround I see on E-bay work for the mids speaker cone? I assume the 8" is just right for the woofer.

Well, they are up and running. They are apparently a rare speaker, not to say valuable. If you want to see a pic, I posted one on a thread here about sources for surrounds. Anyway, it was hard to find a foam kit for the 4" midranges. But now they are back together, and I like them. Many AK folks helped source the surrounds and with the modifications I had to do to get them to fit. I've been testing them against some EPI 100V's and they just seem to have more presence. It's hard to be more precise than that. I'd be interested to know what differences you might expect to hear between the two speakers.

Just one more thing about these speakers and then I will let someone else have a chance. I guess I've run about 20 hours of music through them, including a test tone cd that really worked them over. I was listening last night to Miles Davis "Bitches Brew," more admiring the sounds than listening hard to the music. I was sort of paying attention to how the drum kit was panned ( I think that's the word) into the different channels, when all of a sudden - Bam! Imaging! Soundstage!

The electric piano was between the speakers. The drums were behind the speakers, and the panning wasn't apparent. The tenor man was just right of the left speaker. Amazing! Maybe the surrounds got broken in, maybe I just made some psychoacoustic adjustments, but it was amazing. I like these speakers.

Bam! :saywhat:

that sounds kind of wierd. I don't think psychoacoustic adjustments occur in a Bam!. :scratch2: more like a mid or a tweeter on one channel kicked in. Oh well...sounds like it was a good thing, as long as it doesn't revert back in a Mab!.

It's good to hear you are pleased with the Infinities. I've never heard any 7b's or the EPI's so can't comment on comparisons. What other speakers do you have or had, and how do the 7b's compare to each?

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "Bam." I was excited. Mab, I believe, was the Queen of the Fairies in Yeats' poetry. It was never good when she showed up.

My "good" speakers are Totem Staafs and Spendor S3/5's. 2 way vs. 3 way, and other differences I am sure, but I look forward to comparing them with the RS 7b's.
