Infinity RS lllb vs. Infinity Reference Six

For the last six years or so I thoroughly enjoy my Reference Six (not 6) but always wondered if it is possible to improve the sound quality with a different Infinity model from the Arnie era that has roughly the same footprint?
There is a pair of RS lllb's within reach for maybe 250 - 300,- but all the woofers need re-foam which I have successfully done before:)
My question to the gurus:bowdown: am I wasting my time going down this road? Or could it be:banana:
Let me know your 2cw

Perhaps a sideways move.
The IIIb's do sound nice, however I wouldn't be surprised if the Six could sound even better.

I wasn’t a fan of the mid domes they used in the 3a and b’s...to me it started to sound crowded as the volume went up...but that’s just my impression....

Well, I recall the Reference "One" though "Six" series of around 1991 was offered by the mid-level audio chains such as Rogersound Labs in SoCal (maybe also Federated). They were less costly than previous Arnie/Watkins era lines. These 90's "Reference" models were sold along side with another even more affordable line, the Infinity Studio Monitor (SM) line, with the Reference line being the next step up in terms of quality and performance. Your Reference Six specs as follows (note: only the Four-Six models have an EMIT-R tweeter, the One-Three models have Polycell tweeters like the SM models):
  • 35Hz-40kHz +/-3 dB
  • 90 db @ 1 watt, 1 meter
  • 6 ohms
  • 35-225 watts
  • Injection Molded Graphite (IMG) mids and woofer + EMIT-R tweeter

Thanks for the reply Yamahalic,
I was gonna buy the RS anyways but as it sometimes happens didn't pull the trigger fast enough:boring:
Oh well, there's always next time...

Reviving an old thread I know.
I currently have a pair of Boston Accustics T-1000-series 1, used to have Infinity 3000's. Recently found a pair of Infinity Reference Six speakers and began to wonder how they would sound compared to the Boston's. The Bostons are nice and smooth with good soundstage, not fatigueing, but lacking a bit in the low end which I supplement with an SVS sub. Wondering if the Infinitys would be comparible in all off these aspects and kick up the low end? Any thoughts guys?

Well, I can't comment on the BA's since I never heard them. The six's I believe have the better drivers. BA's the nicer cabinets. Real wood vs plastic.
To me the IMG drivers always sounded nice and punchy but won't kick up the low end. I also supplemented them with a sub (Paradigm 1000) for the low end. Since I posted last, a nice pair of Infinity RS llb's joined the club.  The six's are now doing 5.1 duty and very well.

Do the RSIIb's sound better than the Sixes?
