So I picked up some infinity RS-6001 with the 8" woofers for cheap I new they would need new surrounds but I still got them because the tweeters and mids are in good shape
but now that I am cleaning the goop off to re-foam them I am finding they have a plastic edge glued on to the actual speaker frame

has anyone else re-foamed these they are IMG 8" woofers feel like rigid poly cones but how do I remove the plastic from the frame to re foam them and if I get a more modern foam surround will I need to replace that thin paper junk the original surrounds had.

I am trying to keep my budget cheap and not deal with replacing the woofers.

Any advice or better yet a walk through of what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Carefully and with the patience of Job.

My friend called just yesterday to tell me that he had destroyed the plastic trim rings from a pair of Infinitys.

If he had called before starting, I would have advised working a very thin blade between the plastic trim and metal frame, working it farther in as he went around. This step might require two or more complete circuits before it is free. Judicious use of a heat gun or hair dryer might help to soften the glue.

I have used acetone on glue with good success.

Start off by running a utility knife along the back edge of the ring.

Flip it over and insert the blade under the ring. Then insert a thin, flat head screwdriver next to it (see picture). Gently twist the screwdriver in a prying motion back and forth. Move the blade over a bit and follow it with the screwdriver, continuing to gently pry back and forth. It'll come off fairly easily.

The ring is easily cracked - especially around the holes. The advice from sterofanboy and Rex81 is right on the money. Work slowly and follow their advice. They will come loose.

If you do crack one, you can superglue it back together and it is barley noticeable. Ask me how I know
