Infinity RS3's

I put this in the general speakers forum but it probably belongs here, Mods can you please delete the other thread?


I'm starting to look for a pair of Infinity RS3's, RS3B's, RS4's or RS4b's (the ones made back in the 80's) and I have a question for everyone/anyone. My amp is an Onkyo M5140. Is this amp capable of handling these speakers or do I need to upgrade it?

Onkyo M5140 - Does the 140 stand for watts? I have RS6000's and haven't been able to enjoy them yet due to my low powered 250w amp. Not personally familiar with the models you want but to say the 6000's are power hungry is an understatement.
 
The Infinitys you mentioned have ohm ratings of 4 ohms and 4-8 ohms.
Under the speaker terminals on the back of your amp is a total impedance rating.
I can't make out what it says on a google image.
More google searching leads me to: 105 wpc...8 ohm rating.
Not the best match.

I agree, you should be OK as long as you don't go wild with the volume. I owned a set of RS-4b's quite a while ago; loved those speakers! Wish I still had them. I was running them with a big Denon POA-2200, 200W/ch and they sang beautifully! :sing:
 
I was in the same place you are, when I first got my RSIIIA's. Kenwood KC-209 150 watt power amp, rated for 8 ohms.
Low to moderate listening levels were ok, but if I pushed at all, it'll get hot real quick.
I think you'll find the same thing will happen.
I'm a rookie when it comes to "good amps" but it was recommended to me to get at least an Adcom 545, so I did.
Great choice. 150 watts of high current into 4 ohms, these Infinitys just love it.

So yes, they'll play w/ your Onkyo, but to get the most from these speakers, you'll need to step up to a better amp.

I collect big old Infinities... I have RSIb's, RSIIb's, RSIIIb's and two pair of Kappa 9's. In general, the old Infinitys are rated at 4-6 ohms "nominal" impedence; however, they tend to have some significant dips below 4 ohms, that can place a great deal of stress on the average amplifier. Absolute power rating of the amp is not as important when driving them, as is the current capablility of the amp. A lower-powered (rated @8 ohms) with high current capability will do a much better job that a higher-powered amp that does not have the current reserves. Look for an amp that is actually rated into a 4 or 2 ohm load... as long as the power ratings into the lower impedences increases substantially with each halving of the impedence, the amp will be up to the task of driving your Infinitys without getting stressed.
 
ok I'm now looking at a pair of RS5's It looks to me like one pair of woofers have been replaced?

Opinions on whether or not these are the original woofers? If so I am a bit hesitant to buy these as the 6" woofers in these appear to be hard to find.
 
Have seen (online) several sets where the woofers are mismatched in shading/coloration.
IMO---they are original.
 
They look to be either original or Infinity correct replacements. Some infinity polycones yellow for some reason. I don't think you can reverse that discoloration.
