Infinity RSIIb in VA

I saw that ad and love the look. A buddy of mine and an AK member had a pair a few years ago and had to do a bunch of crossover work and spend a bunch of money to get them right. He eventually sold them for, I think, $850. A guy drove 600 miles to pick them up but it took quite some time to get them gone.

Also, they take massive amounts of power.

Still have to be some of the coolest looking pairs of speakers ever made.:thmbsp:

"Infamous"? Maybe a good description of Kappa 9s, but not RS IIbs. They are overpriced. Maybe if they were mint with boxes. No offence RNORTON, but there is big difference between IIs and IIbs. II midranges go for about 1/10th of what IIb (EMIM) mids go for.

they look really nice and have the equalizer and cables but that is still on the high side.

i love the way that the big infinitys look!

Not really that high as he does have the eq which is not as common to come with the RSIIb's as say the RS-1b's. Orginal owner in perfect shape, you could do a lot worse than that for the money.

As far as the RSII's verse RSIIb's some people like the cone mids and they sure are a lot cheaper to replace, but when it comes to an Infinity I would prefer the EMIT and EMIM's over any cone drivers, as they offer the dipole configuration.

Absolutely correct, Ken.
I know of some vintage speakers that sell for twice as much but don't sound as good:)

Actually, like the IIbs the RS IIs are also dipoles and sound superb, one of the best sounding speakers I've heard, top to bottom with midrange to die for. On any given day, perhaps my favorite pair of speakers.

Emims $150 x 6=900, those square emits are say $50 x 6=300, woofers say $30 x 4=120, eq =$200 plus they sound fantastic....yeah way over priced.

EQ for 200, I will take it!

Just try finding one they don't come around often and finding one for that price good luck. The last one I saw for the RS-1b's they were asking 795 for, and they are much more common. Those EQ's and Crossovers are doing better as investments than even gold or silver.

Yes, those eq's are expensive. I paid 250 for mine bin on ebay. For what they are it's a lot but if you want them to be all original that is what every set came with. Just don't know where they all went. Some AKer got a stash for sure. Sad truth is many of them are in a landfill :(

My RSII and IIb's came from DC area as well. Must have been a lot of Infinity dealers there.

Though I don't listen to mine anymore - the RS-2b's are fantastic speakers and sounds similar to the RS-1b's. I sold one pair, still has another pair. The $1200 price tag is not expensive or overpriced. The last EQ went for ~$500 on ebay.

Take these speakers to Europe - they will be snatched for $1200 in no time at all.

Boy, if they were local I'd be all over them. In the past several years of looking I've realized truly good gear (speakers, amps, preamps, etc) just don't come up for sale very often. When it does, if it's what you're looking for, you should be prepared to pounce.

Mostly because of rarity of EMIMs. I've tried to convince myself that the IIb sounds better but I can't. It only sounds different. Considering how easily that EMIMs are blown or otherwise damaged, I'd just as soon go the route with easily obtainable and reasonably priced replacement drivers.

Prices on these and other vintage Infinity's from the same era have slowly been creeping up over the last several years. Considering condition and completeness (i.e. the equalizer is included), the asking price in this ad is right in the ballpark. Not a deal mind you, but very fair.

I've played around with the mids in the IIs, and I have to agree they really are excellent. I'm just crazy in love with EMIMs right now, and now that I can fix them myself, I have no fears. Better than any cone or dome I've heard, only Quads are better, but I'm not going back there; I like it loud sometimes. I'm listening right now to a quadruple amped system (three massive 15's in big boxes on the bottom!) with EMIMs and can't imagine anything better. I do need tubes on the top. The definition is insane.

The difference between the RSII and IIb run a little deeper then just the mids. The b's have another emit (its crossed over higher than the other two), the woofers are crossed over different, (II's have the lower woofer crossed over lower than the upper which may be why they are a little harder to drive), b's have stiffer taller trapazoid shaped bass cabinets. Just to name a few. Were they worth the extra $1200 more than the II's when they were new? Infinty seamed to think so. I like them better but will not part with either pair ;)
