Info on Tandberg Model 65

Hi! Do any of you fine folks have any info on the Tandberg Model 65? All I know is that it was intended as a playback only unit. I’ve seen some pictures from Louis Armstrong’s home stereo, where it was a prominent piece and the Norwegian radio historical society has a short sentence about it on their site. Other than this I know nothing, and very little seems to be up on internet about this rare model. So if anyone here has info or documentation about it (brochure, user manual, service manual, schematics), I’d be very interested to hear about it

I did. I have one stashed here somewhere. It's based on the model 64 but lacks the record amp, level meter tubes, record and erase heads. Not sure if they made different versions as far as # of tracks or not. Also not sure if this was originally targeted to consumers just to playback pre-recorded tapes, or if they had some use for it in the educational (classroom) applications that Tandberg also developed.

Back in the 60s, a friend of my Dad had a Tandberg playback only deck to copy tapes to his Model 64. I don't recall the model number (could have been 65) but it looked like a stripped down 64. It had no electronics and relied on the "Tape Head" inputs that many receivers had back then. I did some work on it for him. It had an intermittent that needed to be soldered.

It’s quite exciting to dig up info on all these old, mostly forgotten models. It seems quite likely that the model you describe was a 65. From what I’ve dug up on it so far, it seems to have been pretty much exclusive to the U.S. market. Here in Norway I’ve never seen one for sale anyways.

Unrelated, I recently took the bus quite close to the site of one of Tandberg’s old factories. It’s long gone now of course, but I think a lot of people here remember them fondly
