One of my sons is using this equipment for the sound to speakers for his TV
Samsung 8000F TV
One Connect Box
Denon AVR 2307

TV connected to the One Connect Box. Only two set of cables. One big harness and power.
Using the optical cable from the One Connect Box to the Denon's Optical input.

All was working fine.
Until....

The sound cuts in and out and the display on the Denon for the Optical/FR FL input flashes on/off. The radio works just fine.

Tried three other Optical cables and another AVR with Optical input. Continues to have this issue sporadically.

We are thinking it is the main cable harness or the One Connect Box. Moving the wires and tapping the box will not make any difference.


Tried using the HDMI 4(ARC) out on the One Connect Box to feed the Denon's HDMI input. It is not a 4(ARC) HDMI on the Denon. No sound.

Played with settings on the Denon not luck in getting sound when making HDMI a input. Read and reread the manual and got more confused each time.

So am I correct that the audio on the HDMI will not function as input only. A composite signal of some type, like from a DVD. That the audio is buried and we need an adapter to pull it out?

He is facing some expensive choices, new box and or cables to troubleshoot this and repair. The cheapest route right now to troubleshoot. Getting a adapter to use the box's HDMI 4(ARC) out intended for a sound bar to change the signal to a Red/White RCA cable for input.

Any insight in the workings of the new improved equipment would be much appreciated.

What’s the purpose of the One Connect box? I would eliminate it from the chain. Looks like that’s an older AVR, only capable of 480i. You could be fighting old vs new HDMI specs.

I would use the TV to switch sources and setup the TV’s audio output as optical, and go into one of the three optical in’s on the Denon. You’ll have to go through the settings to be sure whichever input you use for the avr is set to that optical input as well.
 
The One Connect Box is from Samsung and has the individual input and output connections. It is a attempt to clean up the install. By having only two wires out of the TV routed down one leg/stand. Only two connections on the back of TV, one for power cord the other a harness that plugs into the One Connect Box.

My question is can you use a HDMI from the box to feed just audio to the Denon as a source for the TV? Was told the 4 ARC HDMI was for a sound bar.

If so how? Need a adapter?

The denon isn't capable of arc.. that came later(by a few years)..
Why the optical out of the tv isn't working properly is the issue.. maybe a setting in tv, maybe an issue with the tv..(you've tried all optical inputs on the rcvr, new cables, and a different avr.. look into the samsung.. try the different audio out settings..
 
Rebooted the TV. The sound is intermittent randomly cutting out. The use of another other then the fiber was to troubleshoot this. To expensive just buy a box in hopes it is the fix.

My son was the one to do the rebooting. He is more in to computer gear. My assumption is back to the orignal configuration. Since he was showing me (rather fast) going through the setup afterwards.

The hdmi audio breakout should work, 2ch of course.. set the tv's audio out to arc..

Something else to check first, the one connect cable.. unplug it and plug it back in at both ends to be sure its snapped in completely, and not under any 'pressure'..
 
I would still try to eliminate that One Connect box, at least for troubleshooting. I also must be frank that I don’t understand it’s place in a system using an AVR. Using an AVR with a properly working ARC setup would still provide “one wire from the TV” functionality, as the AVR is switching your input devices, not the TV. This One Connect box seems like a device you use INSTEAD of an AVR, not something you use in concert with one.

to summarize your first post, you were using an optical connection with the TV, One Connect box, AVR and it was working fine, until it went weird. You’ve tried multiple optical cables with the same result…. So take the One Connect box out of the equation for further troubleshooting.

The tuner isn’t passing signal through that OC box; it’s just sending the signal straight to the AVR’s amps internally.

You’re now trying HDMI cables through the same box with similar problems…. Remove the box from the signal chain and try reassessing your issues. Keep it simple.

I don't believe you can eliminate it. It's basically a remote mount box containing all the normal connections. Best I can tell, the only connection on the TVs themselves are the unique connection for the One Box.
 
In terms of using an HDMI audio extractor though, I would be sure to get one that has optical and or coaxial digital output. If you get one that has only L/R analog outputs you constrain the system to only matrixed surround which, IMO, it a fairly big step backward from discrete surround if one has a HT system.

The One Connect box is the input/output board normally internal on tv's, Samsung removed it and made it an external component..
It has only the one connect cable going to the monitor..
