installing cartridge without gauge or protractor

Hello I finally received my new cartridge and headshell! I dont have the proper tools, such as protractor and overhang gauge. Im pretty anxious to get this thing installed and online! Can anyone give me some guidance as to where to mount the cart on the headshell? More or less? (1/2 from the front, all the way to the back,etc.), I understand I should have the proper tools, but Im workin on it! Im getting this thing up and running tonight! any advice would be appreciated!

Get a tape measure, Technics arm overhang is is 52mm from the stylus tip to the rubber washer on the head shell.

Just adjust the cartridge and stylus so the stylus tip is 52mm away from the washer as pictured above, and make sure the cart is straight in the headshell

Wouldn't it be better to print out one of the various templates? I haven't done that myself but wouldn't the Stevenson work on the 1200?

Yeah get the gauge as Illini pointed out. From my quick investigation others have had luck with the Stevenson.

You don't need a gauge or a protractor. If you have a ruler, use it to just draw two lines 52mm apart. Use notebook paper to help. You don't need to buy anything.

Download and print the "stupid protractor". Take no offense by the name, that's just what they call it. Use either the Loefgren or Baerwald. Make sure when you print that you set the printer settings to print to full 100% size.

The M35X is a conical stylus, so the 52mm overhang and keeping it straight in the headshell, more or less, ought to do it. Alignment becomes increasingly more critical as stylus tips increase in complexity. But a conical stylus is a ball on the end, basically, so there is huge latitude there. At most angles with the cartridge generally in position, the tip will enter the groove properly.

Yes--download a protractor from VE, and make sure you print it full size (not scale to fit page), but Technics TTs were set up with the Stevenson alignment--you can try the others, but they were originally designed for the Stevenson alignment.

Pretty important to note what SA-708 has pointed out. Will save you much frustration along the way if you don't understand the difference between the various "protractor" methodologies. Took some time for me to realize how that all worked. If you use the recommended 52mm distance it should be validated against the Stevenson alignment and no others. The Baerwald and Loefgren protractors achieve a different distortion balance and null points than the Stevenson. It comes down to a matter of preference. I generally follow what the manaufacturer of the table provides but in some cases the manufacturers recommendation did not take into account various cartridge body's.
