Instructions/problems Yamaha CX-10000

I picked up a Yamaha Anniversary CX-10000 and of course have no manual. I'm not sure if there is a problem or if I just don't know how to operate this beast. I don't seem to be able to get sound if the DSP is turned off and I prefer to listen to my music the way it was recorded and not with all the special effects. So when I turn off the DSP I get no sound. Anyone have any ideas?

There are several sets of outputs which really confuse me. They are marked Main, Front, Rear and LFE front and rear for Subs I suppose. I think I'm connected up to "Main" at the moment.

just looking at the pic on TVK, there are two on/off switches on the front panel: one for the EQ and one for the effects, apparently. you don't have "main" muted by accident, do you? that's the button above the DSP on/off, which lights up if either "main" or "effect" is muted. other than that, i can't see what would be the problem. does the DSP display go dark when you turn it off?

I appreciate all the input and it appears everyone had a little piece to the puzzle but there is still much for me to learn about this preamp....a manual sure would be nice. Actually it did come with a manual but it is in Japanese....not much help. Anyway, if I use the the "Main" ouputs I can bypass the DSP and Equalizer. Apparently the front and rear outputs are used in a 4 speaker arrangement to enhance the DSP capabilities. At least I know the preamp works as it should.

Not completely, until I get time to try various hookups. But to play basic straight forward music through my MX-2000 I think I have it figured out. I'm guessing if I had time to hook up 4 speakers; two through the front and two through the rear outputs I could probably use the DSP to make all kinds of special effects with the 20 preprogrammed effects. The equalizer does appear to be working through the main outputs. Again, only guessing here but it appears that the front, rear and LFE outputs were an early version of creating home theater faux surround sound before 5.1 DVD's(or DVD-A/SACD) were actually created; especially since preamp also has video outputs as well.

How do you turn off the DSP on the CX-10000?

I am not familiar with this unit, and I cannot find a clear enough image on the internet where I can read the buttons. On my many Yamaha DSP units, I push a button marked "Effect", which causes the signal for the "main" output to bypass the DSP circuits. So, when I hit the "Effect" button, a light over the button lights up and the signal is pure stereo.

that seems just a bit counterintuitive, unless the button was labeled "effect off". reminds me a bit of the Denon PRA-1000's "Preouts Off" - 'on or off' conundrum...why didn't they just call it "Preouts" - 'on or off.'

I am lucky I purchased all of my DSP units new with manuals to help me figure some things out. I actually did not provide every detail in previous post. When I push the "Effect" button, a separate light to the side of the Effect button goes on, this light is marked "Off" under it, so the two faceplate markings are together. I push the Effect button again and the light goes off, reverting back to DSP ("Effect") mode.

Imfree:
This sounds exactly like how my DSP-E300 unit operates. In the old days, Yamaha created the digital "Soundfields" via the use of either 4 or 6 channel operation, as follows:

4 Channel: mains + rear effect speakers
6 Channel: mains + front effect speakers + rear effect speakers

Yamaha concept is that your mains deliver the meat of the music, and the effects channels deliver the DSP mode soundfield effects augmentation (such as reverb). I never much cared for the 6 channel mode myself, so I switched the unit to 4 channel mode which causes the front effects sound to be integrated into the mains when in DSP mode. Bypass mode goes strait through to the mains.

The confusing part for many is that for Yamaha, the "S" on DSP stands for "Soundfield" (not "Signal"). So, every DSP unit I have seen from the old days did not accept digital signals for DSP processing. Perhaps the CX-10000 is a special case? I would be interested to find out if it can process digital signals directly for the DSP processing?
