Hi
Been away from audio for awhile. I am looking to get a simple two channel system (monitors, maybe a sub) leaning toward Ascend Sierra 2 speakers. Will want simple connectivity to small digital source, tv,maybe streaming. Will I get audible improvement re music with an integrated amp v a home theatre receiver? Receivers seem to make it easier to connect to sources but,at the same time have a ton of things I'll never use? Any suggestions. Budget is 1k or less.

You can always get an integrated with a built-in dac that way you can hook it up to your tv. I did that for a while with an onkyo a-9050 to simplify my set-up...for awhile until I went crazy and got separates and an external dac :). I ditched avrs a while back since i found integrateds and then separates to have much better build quality.
 
Many HTR's have crossovers, eq curves and DSP features that may affect even two channel playback.

There are several new integrated amps from Yamaha, Marantz, NAD and others that should fit your needs from around $300 and up.
