Interesting Akai speakers on CL...

The fact that the CL poster assumes some value based on a single bid (ie seller probably bought it back) in currency he didn't bother to convert back to dollars is just too funny.

But they are kinda cool speakers.

Assuming the transaction was complete, 5,000 chinese yuan converts to about $725USD.

Figured I'd kinda let the seller know this but no way to contact.

he was at my house yesterday checking out some stuff of mine. he's a really good guy who i've ran into a few times. he's not looking to get 5K, i guarantee he just didn't think of the conversion.

a pair of those Akai ss-90's sold for $23.50 on the auction site on Nov. 2nd of this year. Interesting looking things. :)

I've seen pictures of other Akai SS-xxx series speakers. I know that the -50, -70, and -110 were all suite case portable speakers sold for use with AKAI R2R units. I believe they were all coax two-ways. Past listings in CL and that auction site would suggest pairs of these can be had fairly inexpensively. I've got a pair of the SS-110 and have to say they are very efficient and sound pretty nice with a low power tube amp.

These SS-90 appear to be a slightly different animal, maybe meant for the home as opposed to portable. I bet they too are a good sounding efficient speaker.

Four six inchers, one tweeter, open backed design.

Stying kind looks like 1960's me thinks.

Interesting.

I'd say 5,000 yuan, or $750 is still kinda steep, though.

similar to audax?

The construction of these Akai speakers is very similar to a couple sets set of same era speakers I own, which were marketed by Rek-o-cut. The have the same wooden frame, open front and back with speaker cloth. Even have the same small wooden feet. Each has 5 alnico drivers, 4 six inch and a two inch tweeter. Sold as Audax CA-70 in approx 1961. I watched a pair of them sell on epay for $249. I'll try to attach pix I saved of the auction.
