My shop owners are tossing this. Is it total garbage?

Cheap older dvd/cd player is my guess.
If it works and you need one keep it.

If it has an HDMI output I'd give it a listen. If no HDMI I wouldn't bother.

No more or less than any other cheap DVD player. Rather than throw such things away outright, I recycle the power cord and power transformer (if it has one) for other projects.
