Looking for CD Storage solution(s) for a small dwelling

As with many, I stopped playing the shuffle game with CDs years ago. Everything ripped to flac using jRiver (just insert CD, press rip button, is done), and stacked the CDs on 200 disk spindle cases. The jewel cases got boxed and tossed in the attic, never to be seen again.

* Losing the jewel cases actually pre-dated the rip to flac by several years as I'd already transferred most of the disks to a couple Sony carousel players. Which have since been boxed and tossed in the attic, never to be seen again. ;-}

ripped them all in original format, then stored in milk crates. Takes up about 1/4 of a closet for my entire collection, and I never touch the physical media any more.

back when I first ripped everything I was still using windows, so exact audio copy. Now, I use whatever cd ripping software debian has, as long as it uses cdparanoia I'm assured of a bit for bit copy.

Did this 20 years ago, and never regretted it a bit. Now I buy a cd/dvd/blu-ray and it gets ripped and stored immediately.
MakeMKV does great bit for bit rips of films.

back in the nineties, before I ripped everything, I had four of those hundred cd spinners side by side. Then that became four 100 cd sony players chained together. My current way is much much more compact, and there's a hell of a lot more then 400 cds.... probably 3,4 thousand by now.
 
Betcha it ain't as compact as mine ... this little beastie has 3tb of storage built in ... ;-}

I used ikea benno then it was discontinued. Next ikea gnedby.

They're near perfect, but I hear they're being discontinued too. :rant:

I found an old nine drawer dresser at a thrift store for less than $100. The drawers were tall enough to accommodate jewel cases with the spines facing up for easy selection and wide enough to put three rows in each drawer. It would hold a little over 900 cds hidden away.

When my collection outgrew the dresser, I decided to build cd shelves. I purchased some 1x6s at the big box hardware store that were already painted white and had them cut to the needed length at the store. All I did at home was measure, drill some holes and drive some screws.

I made four cases six feet tall and two feet wide. 1000 cds fit on three of them and I have a spare in the garage waiting for my collection to grow. This cost less than $200.

I bought a used CD rack that was flimsy and she Ikea shelves and created built-in storage for over a thousand discs and some other stuff. Very sturdy after attaching them together and to the wall.

Yeah; how many is an important question... I've got 3000+. I keep them in these boxes, that I get from facilities management at work:

Each box cut up into two, single-layer CD storage boxes, each holding ~90 CDs. Then they're put in a neat pile in the attic. After ripping as FLAC to one of these:

Early in my marriage, my wife tossed all of the jewel cases for my entire CD collection. She put the discs in a drawer like case. It was awful. Couldn’t find anything and even after 20+ years, it seems like some are missing. Not long ago she mentioned that I should get some cases for them...I bit my tongue.
 
I found it great fun doing a flexy cd shelf using 1x6's I stained and drilled, using 5/8 threaded rod.
Super tidy, ridiculously strong, and stylish. Pics are here somewhere.

Top, NAS drive 2 terabyte and up.
Middle, USB drive, 1 or more TB
Bottom, micro SD card, 250 gigabyte
Any of these are capable of holding hundreds or thousands of CD's. The CD player is obsolete unless one is fascinated by spinning media and wall cabinets full of clutter. ;)
