Hey all. I am not as knowledgeable as most of you but I am a young audiophile enthusiast. So for the past 3 years I have been running my Klipsch RF II's on a Yamaha CR 220. However, just this weekend I found a Marantz 2270 and jumped on it. So I hooked everything up and was stunned at the difference in sound quality at low to mid level volume. However, tonight I wanted to really take it for a test drive and unfortunately at higher volume one of the speakers is beginning to crackle. Now I would have imagines the Marantz at 70 wpc would kill the Yamaha at only 15! Am I missing something? The Marantz has been refurbished (supposedly). Could I have blown a tweeter and it just happened to come at the same time I got the new receiver and I am just now noticing? Any thoughts or opinions would be most welcomed and appreciated! THANKS!

Define "crackling"

Have you tried swapping speakers from right to left and vice versa ?

If the "crackling" moves with the speaker then you have a speaker issue, if the "crackling" stays on the same side then you may have an issue with your 2270.
 
The Crackling is more of high volume popping. I just put the yamaha back on the speakers and cranked it and had no problem. So I think it is safe to say its not the speakers. My only thought is that the power of the yamaha at 15 watts cant drive them to pop and crack but the Marantz can? Though the yamaha can actually get a higher volume and bigger sound at this point. Not sure. But its both speakers. Perhaps I should have the Marantz looked at.

Do you have the bass control turned up and / or the loudness contour on? Sounds like maybe the 2270 is overdriving the speakers due to too much bottom end. Try it again with the tone controls set flat and no loudness if you haven't already.
 
Usually the underpowered unit will cause problems by clipping when you try to drive it too much. I think your Yamaha is fine and it is the Marantz that has a problem. The 2270 is a nice unit, but it is aged and probably needs to be checked out by a tech.Good luck!
 
So I just tried that and turned them all to 50%. Loudness off. I could get a louder volume however, I did get to a point where the speakers began to buckle. And of course it wasnt the sound I wanted. And again, not to beat a dead horse but it wasnt even close to the thump I could get from that little yamaha. I think that is the biggest mystery to me.
 
Thanks for everyone's insight on this! I will keep experimenting and see if I can find something that works. Otherwise I will just have to take it in for a tune up!
