Interesting speaker transaction

Just had a very interesting experience today selling two pairs of speakers.

I put my JBL L100s up for sale on BT and CL. I was contacted by a guy from Virginia. He was heading to St. Louis today, so he wanted to detour to buy the L100s. So, he shows up at my house today at 8:45 this morning in a minivan. He is Asian (just a detail). He also wanted a pair of Pioneer CS-63DX (that I had recapped but still had issues with two dead tweeters and some XO work I hadn't gotten to yet). Didn't want to hear them first. Paid me top dollar and just wanted them to resell. His van was already half full of speakers. Pioneer CS-88a, CS-99a,1 CS-63dx and some Bose. He told me he was on his way to St. Louis to buy more speakers and a Sansui receiver. Then on to Kansas City, Kansas and Nebraska. Probably more places if he finds more.

This guy was dedicated to buying up vintage speakers. Anyone else run into this dude?

There’s a guy in here in St. Louis who buys classic and vintage and ships them back to his home country, Vietnam. I wonder the story as they are reminders are of a poignant era. Nice guy, doesn’t lowball, but he haggles.

They work in teams...all that stuff goes to Asia where it brings top dollar. They do it with antiques too. Kinda sucks cause there are only so many vintage audio pieces out there.

Same with West Coast, Detroit, and HI real estate. If "it" is for sale and they have cash; money talks and BS walks...

Hmmm.....even more interesting. Doesn't bother me. I got good money for them. The L100s were free and I got the 63DXs for $235 at auction with a pair of 88As. Virtually pure profit to pay bills. I'm almost debt free now, so, on my way to a nice mid-life-crisis-convertible-sports-car.

Here in Australia l had a young guy (Asian)buy a pair of Celestion 66 from me off that site.
When he dropped by to pick them up he couldn't fit them into his car.
Ironically l had a job in his area so l told him I'd drop them off.
He then bought a pair of JBL speakers off me which he took with him.
When l dropped them off he lived in a tiny unit.
I also suspected he was buying them to ship.

As a side note I've sold a lot of gear to Asian guys over the years.
They always target the best

The buyer I have sold to was from Cambodia originally and yes loves silver vintage gear, big wooden cabinet speakers. Tube gear R2R decks also, no cassettes or turntables IIRC.
Fills out a sheet of paper with unit price then price for it all. Has you sign and then gives out the green.

Always has a van and sometimes a trailer full of nice gear.

A few years ago I sold a Classe amp to an Asian for top dollar. From what I gathered it was all about the brand name as he wasn't interested in any of it's details.

My wife is Vietnamese, and yes to many Asians it is all about brand name. I'm lucky that my wife is more frugal than that and loves to shop GoodWills and Thrift stores. Her Asian friends love her Lois Vitton purse, her Black and White outfits, her Coach hand bags..........and she got them all for pennies on the dollar at GoodWills and Thrift stores. She's an amazing woman and is the reason I have been able to do the things with my system I have been able to do.

And here I thought it was just because you are a rich guy!
Lol.. .

My wife is the same way very frugal and you are very fortunate also!

I worked with a guy that bought tube equipment in the '90's. All of it went to Japan. Now its SS stuff going to China and Vietnam.

I had a speaker that was taken from behind the screen of an old theater. It had a large bass bin with a multi-cell horn on top. I paid a friend $35 for it and its accompanying amp. After about 20 years, I was going to give it away to make more room in the garage when another AK member told me it might be worth money. He hooked me up with an interested party. The buyer was in Chicago, about five hours from my location. Within 7 hours from contact, the buyer was at my door with cash-in-hand ($2500). Easiest sell I ever made. In appreciation, I sent the AK member $200 for the referral.

Same here in Ontario every once and a while there is a gentleman that responds to something I put up for offer online. Usually he walks away with 4 or 5pcs and he always has a minivan that's already half full. Lap Van.

In Vancouver there are perpetual ads running on CL for a few years asking for used gear. The ads differ slightly and a couple are turntable specific but it would not surprise me if the same person was responsible for all of them.

There has been a huge influx into the area of Chinese with money. There is an ever enlarging "goods pipeline" between Vancouver and mainland China for all sorts of things.

I recommend a 986 Porsche Boxster S, prices not to silly and a great fun car. Unless your really tall!

Hey, if someone wants to use the stuff, that is great. This is kind of like reverse white van. There are lots of amps and speakers that ended up in landfills so I think this is a good thing. I certainly wouldn't want any of the speakers that you mentioned that the guy had in the van, and if someone in another country wants them and will use them, that's great.
