Can some explain the following to me?

So I put a record on my Technics. I turn my receiver on, I DO NOT turn my TT on. I drop the needle, still no power to the Technics. I manually spin the platter and I get music, still no power. That's pretty cool.

Just think about it for a second.

The ONLY reason you would turn a TT on is to get power to the motor to rotate the platter and other automated bits like lifting arm etc.
If you have done that yourself by spinning the platter, electricity will be generated by the stylus in the groove, flowing through the cart and wiring to your amp.

Pretty simple really, no big mystery here....
 
Sure, The Cartridge is a transducer all on it's own. It generates its own signal.The electric signal passes through the cartridge pins, the arm, through the interior of the Table unimpeded, direct to the RCA Out Jacks, or Cables. Same with a belt Drive Table as well.

All the electronics within a Direct Drive Table do, is control the Platter, any Strobe Lights, Platter Light, and any mechanical devices, such as an end of Arm Lift.

No RIAA pre-amp in the turntable is also why the phono "in" section is different than the CD, AUX, TUNER and TAPE in.

The turntable plug generates power for platter rotation- which you are doing manually.

Some turntables may also need this for advanced power distribution for fancy features like automated tone arm operation, servo speed lock, servo arm control, digital or metered strobe, etc.
 
In laymens terms the cart is like a little generator but instead of rotation it uses vibration to generate power via magnets and coils.
