Internet Radio Streaming on Yamaha Network Players (CD-N500, R-N602, ...

I have a Yamaha CD-N500 which, even though a bit old, had been working flawlessly for streaming internet radio stations from the time I bought the unit in 2013. Several months ago, apparently there was a (publicized) falling out of vTuner (the radio streaming server) with Yamaha, and CD-N500 could no longer function as my radio receiver. At the time, Yamaha announced/released a firmware update that would allow the use of a different streaming server on some of their network players but the CD-N500 was, alas, not on the list. So, with my apology in case this has been already discussed somewhere on the forum, I am trying to figure out what are my remaining options:

1) Despite Yamaha's claim that existing bookmarks (stations) on the vTuner server should continue to work as before, I don't seem to be able to stream any of the 6 or so stations I had bookmarked. Has anyone been able to continue to listen to their "grandfathered" stations on CD-N500 ?

2) I don't mind paying the subscription fee that vTuner is now asking of Yamaha users, but the remote control for the CD-N500 had not been used since the initial setup (I use the app) and is nowhere to be found. To reset CD-N500 and reprogram it for the new service though, it seem one _has to_ use the remote control unit (not sure why this cannot be done through the app on the smartphone but, with Yamaha, such idiosyncrasies are not out of character). Would anyone know how to enter the "setup" mode on this device without the remote control ?

3) Alternatively, and since I have not been able to find a replacement (new or used) remote controller for CD-N500 (CDX9 - ZF37520), would anyone know what other more commonly available Yamaha remotes are _fully_ compatible with this device ?

4) I understand that I can setup a DLNA server on my Mac and use CD-N500 as a DLNA client but since my primary use of the CD-N500 is as an internet-radio receiver (for a handful of classical stations), does anyone know if one can stream from an internet radio player (or web browser) running on the Mac to CD-N500 through the DLNA server (running on the same Mac ?)

Again, my apology if any of these questions have already been covered in one of the forums but I would appreciate any suggestion from those who are familiar with the issue as well as other alternatives that I have not considered. If need be, I can dedicate a smart phone to communicate with the CD-N500 via the front USB port but I don't how to stream music played on the phone to CD-N500 through the USB port (and don't want to go through the (audio) headphone jack as it defeats the purpose.)

I have the R-N500 so have the same issue as your CD-N500

1) No . The display shows a message to visit vtuner or something like that, but I never tried to to use vtuner any further after it was restricted.

2) I think there are a couple of ways. For the R-N500, Power off the receiver using the power toggle switch on the front panel. Then, while still OFF, press and HOLD the RETURN button while turning the power back on using the Power button. You can download the manual for your device to be sure..

4) Yes, I stream to the R-N500. I have low power PC which stores all my music, and a UpNp/DLNA music server on the same PC, connected to my LAN ( server software is MEZZMO PRO ), and use a Iphone control app (Creation 5 Media App ), which controls the server and connects to the R-N500. The media app also controls the Yamaha volume , music selection, plus forward/backward movement and other functions... The Yamaha NP player app (for Iphone) did not discover my music server, which ultimately led me to Creation 5 - but there are other music servers and control apps which should also work for you.
Mezzmo PRO also allows you to discover and stream internet music to your Yamaha as well.. Plus it's not written in Java and is very fast on my PC.

Edit: I see you have mac, so not sure the best media server for you.

There are some issues that I had, mainly because of my VLAN and multicast packets, which you may not have.

I love the R-N500 and have no reason to upgrade and I expect the CD-N500 is also a nice unit.

I got my 'network receiver' for cheap 5.1, and haven't even hooked it to the network. It seems like features that depend on continuing business relationships, or spending on IT labor, are iffy propositions.
 
I doubt many will miss the integrated vtuner function in the receiver. Using the phone app controller offers more functionality and increases the amount of available internet streams.
The amount of setup is small and well within the average persons ability . Definitely worth it .

Thanks so much for the followup to the question on internet-radio streaming on CD-N500.
I do not miss the vTuner per-se, but am looking for a mechanism to stream directly from a given URL (to CD-N500 or R-N602.) What puzzles me is that Yamaha goes to a great length to "hard-wire" the support for several proprietary audio streaming protocols (e.g. Deezer, Pandora, Spotify, etc, ... services which, like vTuner, may or may not be available down the road) in their network players rather than offering a generic "URL" player that would encompass all of these as well as other streamers that are currently accessible through a standard HTML-5 browser interface ? So I am wondering if anyone has figured out a way to "play" an audio URL on any of the Yamaha device ?

No reprogramming here - I just signed up for vTuner just by using the MAC address of my CD-N500 as the required code (not clear at all from their page, but I guessed it from the Yamaha manual page on hidden setup features). If you can’t find a way to see the MAC address without the remote, you might be able to see it from your router management webpage or net analyser app (by a process of elimination, perhaps switching off devices, I'm not an expert on this! )

I also bought a right-angled USB extension cable and a cheap iPhone stand to neatly have an old smartphone on top of the player, with the cables mostly hidden. The USB input allows whatever sound app you are using on the phone to be routed through the player I have found - for iPhone at least.
