I decided to recreat part of my college system which was Heresy I"s , w Sony intergrated amp, Dual 501 belt drive with ortofon cartridge and a Nakamichi tape deck. But I upgraded some items. Over the past year I've chased anything but ebay and put together the following: Klipsh Heresey I's PO replaced twitters in both, Marantaz, 170DC, Marantz 3250 Preamp, Dual 701. And 'm running a wireless Polk Audio subwoofer as well. Works great. The amp is a bit noisy and I can tell the tone is there but the umph is not.

The Dual will not return the tone arm after play and the quartz light is not on or working. Sounds great with the 30+ year old Azden 10E cartridge. I do have a NOS stylus for it.

I'm in the Cleveland area and need someone to restore the equipment or given the browing of the forums, Dave at fixxmydual seems to be the bomb and the turntable needs a new plinth bcs the current one is cracked. As for the Marantz, any ideas? I have done business many time with Sound Classic in Rockford Ill.

I bought one of their restored 2230b Marantz receivers for my daughter. That thing sounds fantastic in my system, frankly a bit better tonnally that the separates. I checked all my wiring thrice, checked my controls (read the manual twice to learn how to use the pre amp).

Regarding the amp is just sounds flat compared to my daughters Sound Classic restored 2230b.

Thoughts?

Welcome from Marlboro, on stark/ portage co. line. Check speaker phasing if you haven't yet. Flip conn on one speaker. If it sounds better, jam on! Where in Cuyahoga co. are you?

@Catmanboo, speaker phasing is dead on. i just think the amp and pre-amp are nearly 42 years old and need to be restored inside. With amp set to AC and the gain at mid point; preamp contour control at zero, all filters off on the preamp, bass at mid point, mid range two steps below bass and treble at the same level at the bass, mid point, set to phono, the amp will occassionally clip when volume is at 5/8ths on the volume control playing RUSH, Tom Scott, DEVO or whatever. It's not continuous clipping, just the occassional. I thought the amp would be able to push a bit further than that. And there is a nasty hum that you can hear in the background, low but there, Grounding is good. Thoughts or is there another forum I should post.

I'm in Hudson, Ohio, looking for someone local that specializes in vintage Marantz restoration and I'm most likely going to send my dual to the guy at fix my dual. Thoughts.
