I'm fixing up a Quad 405, and considering preamps for it. Thinking it would be neat to have a British preamp which inverts, since the 405 inverts, and the Quad preamps don't get much love. So I was thinking Bryston but I know there are others but that's all I know.
Also considering CJ if I can find the right one for the right price. Looking for ballpark of $1K or less but you know how it goes... Looking for the combination of great sound with good aesthetics. I think the black Brystons or the gold-ish CJ's could look good enough with the beige 405. Similar footprint to the 405 would be great. Open to other suggestions as well, solid state or tube. I sold my CJ PV-5 because even 'though I had it in top shape, the board was long in the tooth and developing problems, so I'm a bit wary of vintage tube gear that's not point-to-point.
Need phono, no remote, no video or AV inputs, no rack mount ears, phase inverting. I'll likely be dropping the gain of the 405 to work with whatever I'd get.
