iPhone 7 dumping the 3.5mm phone plug??? Maybe a good thing.

I like vintage gear — my preamp is from 2007.
I've added some pictures of what it basically entails... It's not a big deal.
They are not removing the internal DAC, they are just removing a headphone jack. They are including the adapter for anyone not willing to play ball. Headphone manufactures will be all over this... there will be TONS of options out there, because it's apple and they will sell millions and millions of these phones in the first month.
And you have to realize that probably something like 98% of iPhone users use the supplied headphones, I know gobs of my non-audio friends do. Apple is including wired, lightning earpods with the phone just as they have always done.

Both the adapter for the 3.5mm is included. also set of Earpods with the lightning plug plug. This adapter is available for $9 bucks in the Apple Store. There is also what they are calling the AirPod a completely cordless wireless version of the Earpods.There is also 2 Beats earphones, and a Beats Headset. All of the wireless earphones have a custom Apple chip the enhance the connectivity and sound. As for the reasons Apple sited a number. clearing interior space for larger batteries, able to make the iPhone 7 water resistant for the first time. and now the iPhone has stereo speakers located and the top and bottom.
Airpods They recharge in the case. to activate them you just open the cover. There is one problem I will not pay $159.95 for them.

I've got to use some goofy adapter to use my existing headphones with the new iPhone. Any Lightning headphones I buy will only work with this device, so if I bring along my iPod, or iPad, I've got to bring a second set of headphones for them. And if I want to use the Lightning headphones, I can't charge the phone while I'm listening.

Biggest pain is not being able to charge while listening. I am hoping though, that the SE is still around when I need a new phone as it actually fits my hand and pockets

I bet we will see docks or adapters with two lightning ports.
The USB DACs that work with the USB/lightning adapter can charge and play simultaneously using just the lightning port now.

Yeah, how many of the whiners out there still use an IPhone even after the improvement seen with the improved lightning plug that replaced the 30 pin plug?
Somehow we seem to adapt. Either that or stay in older technology. Just be prepared to drop money on assorted cables and stuff to upgrade "old" technology.

I have been using wireless earphones for several years and while what I presently have does not sound as good as my Shure SE215's I find it so annoying to be tethered to my iPhone. by dumping the 3.5mm phone jack Apple is forcing the use of the 24bit DAC that is in the iPhone which will result in much better sound. Plus there is no reason why a wireless headphone cannot sound great the technology is there. While Samsung was derisively pointing out their temporally recalled Galaxy 7 had a 3.5mm phone jack all I have to say is he who laughs last laughs best. I went back and watched the presentation of the AirPods and what a sophisticated set of earphones they are 159.95 but that is just $10 bucks more then I have paid for Etymotic HF3's. We will see.

I am interested in the tech behind the wireless they are using. They didn't say it was lossless, but it might be if it isn't Bluetooth. The Air Pods were definitely cool if you move from one device to another since it connects automatically. However, I want to know more about the tech they are using.

I just wanna thank @transmaster for being another voice of reason here on AK. I understand not everyone loves apple as much as I do... But a lot of the venom being spit about this around the forums makes me feel like 90% of AKers must still use a flip phone.
Don't like it. Don't buy it. I kinda doubt the haters will shell out $600+ for a phone anyway. That money could be used toward a hell of an upgrade to their SX-650 receivers.

I for one can't foresee spending $160 on a pair of Apple ear buds that look so easy to lose.

I do tend to prefer tower designs ...
My wife's Powerbook G4 still works (mostly for writing chores)
she uses a recent Macbook pro for daily use ...
Hardware obsoletes as tech moves forward, I don't bemoan any of the SCSI drives,
Zip drives or floppies I used in the past - its the cost of going faster with better software.
I paid $400 for 16 MEGS of ram back in the day & I got a deal - $500-600 was what it cost back then ...

The complaints about Apple not going into backward compatibility really puts a smile on my face. Apple has always been this way from the very beginning look forward not back. If you want backward compatibility then get a PC type computing device. I am not an Apple fanboy but I do appreciate how they work. I have been using computers since the early 1970's,and I have watched the raise of the personal computer. I even had an Apple II in 1984. What has always amused me about Apple is the number of people who stand at the local "AA" (Apple Anonymous) meeting and say "Hi I am Joe and I hate Apple", and it has always been this way and I have never really figured out why. The argument to me sounds like the classic knock down drag outs between GMC, and Chevy Trucks owners arguing which is better. It is nice to have a computing company that has the ability to go their own way. What I see happening is in a few short years the 3.5mm phone jack will be gone from high end smart phones and people will wear audiophile grade wireless earphones.

Most of the new tech is backward compatible via adapters. Not sure if they can still run floppy discs, but I am sure someone was pissed off when they switched to compact discs. Yes, they got rid of USB 2 when USB3 came along. It is called removing old tech for new and faster tech. USB 3 ports are backward compatible.
The Macs that have thunderbolt are backward compatible with everything above via an adapter. This makes it possible for pros with desktop computers to still have the ability to run older technology. Obviously, Apple isn't going to make computers with floppy discs and every other obsolete technology or your laptop would weigh ten pounds.
Thunderbolt 3 (via compatible USB-C ports) will be compatible with older Thunderbolt versions via adapters, as well, according to Intel.
If you don't care about new and better technology, I am not sure which brand would really suit you. They all are moving ahead and leaving behind USB 2 (as an example). Maybe just hold onto that old computer if you prefer the outdated ports or get an adapter?
As with every Apple thread, there is always a rant that takes it off the main subject. Personally, I think they removed the headphone jack this year so that they would have more room in the case when they decide to remove the bezels (there are already rumors of that happening next year). Their philosophy is that most people prefer slim lightweight mobile tech and if one port can eliminate another port (which gives them more room in the case) while still giving you access to the old function via an adapter, then it can be removed.
It is kind of like battery power in the iPhone. If it weighed 2 pounds, we could get through a lot longer without a charge. However, most people don't need it. Therefore, there are battery power banks and battery cases for those that do.
One of the reasons why the lightning plug is going to be such a great thing for earphones is the fact that it can supply power. What does this mean. Here is an example of what could be done. The Shure KSE1500 Electrostatic Earphone system. This is a pie in the sky example at $3000 dollars but in the future something like this could be built and instead of a box with controls and a battery it would be powered from the iPhone, or iPad and controlled from a App. Or you could build the whole thing in to a wireless setup with a future audiophile level transmission standard. This is what Apple has ignited the market place cannot ignore a device that is in the hands of 10's of millions of people.

When the iPhone XX goes to wireless charging and dumps the Lightning plug all together to make a completely closed iPhone with no external openings, By then we will have earphones who's digital wireless system produces music of a quality only limited by the technology of the music drivers in the ear pieces. perhaps and SIM card slot but I would not bet on that either. There is no reason why a phone cannot be provisioned with downloaded firmware.

Exactly!!! Comparing my Senso Bluetooth earsets, with my Shure SE215's the major difference is the Shure are more transparent. The Senso's are kind of bass heavy but using the excellent music App EqualizerPro which has an excellent graphic's equalizer I can adjust the Senso so they sound damn close to the Shure's.
