iPod Touch anyone?

No hits in "Search" so let's start a thread??

I was talking to jmathers the other day and the conversation turned to the iPod Touch and how cool it was. Wireless internet access anywhere you can grab a WiFi signal. I have an older laptop I use for such stuff, but I have to admit, being able to online via my iPod IS very attractive. I'd even downgrade my storage from 30GB to 8GB just for the online access.

So, does anyone have one? How do you like it? How does Safari work? How strong a signal do you need? How easy is it to grab a WiFi on the road (Starbucks, Panera, libraries, unsecured sites, etc.) I guess the features are pretty much the same on iPhone, so users of that device can chime in too.

Let me know!

I just got the 16 gig a couple of weeks ago at the Apple store when I bought my daughter a new Macbook for college. Paid $399 for it but got a $299 rebate in just 4 days.
So far I really like the iPod touch and have been using it mostly for email and connecting on the internet. Some of my posts on AK have been with the iPod touch. Safari works great and I am impressed with it's speed. I have no problem connecting with my wireless at home and going around the neighborhood it surprises me how many of my neighbors have an unsecured wireless setup.
It is a convenient tool for sure.

What a $299 rebate on a $399 16GB iPod touch??? It's not an iPhone, but a Touch?
$100 net? What were the strings??
I may have to check that out

Never mind. It's tied to that Mac you bought your daughter.

But it sounds like it may be exactly what I need. Heck, if I sell my iPod and old laptop, I could even spring for a 16GB...

Anyone else???

I got one, saved up for a year to get it.
It was really cool and I had it from oct 2007-may-2008.
The hold button stopped working so I couldn't shut it off, but they replaced it for free which was nice.

Then the replacement broke less than a week later only producing mono out of the headphone jack.

But they replaced it for free again and I sold it to my brother for $300 which was a hell of a deal because I bought mine for $450 when you include tax, plus $15 for a screen protector and a $30 case.

I really recommend that you get a screen protector though, there are ones that stick on with only static that work really well, and then you can get a case for further protection too...

I have a 32gb touch and I love it. From the day I got it, mine was jailbroken, and now I am running firmware 2.0. I like the Remote feature, being able to control iTunes from afar, and the internet access works well. I can get a connection almost anywhere, and for the first few weeks that I was living in my apartment, I relied on my Touch to borrow internet from my neighbors. Typing on the Touch may be difficult to get used to, but once you get comfortable with it you don't mind as much.

The audio quality is good, but I would definitely invest in some other headphones. I prefer Grado SR-80s, but that's just me.

Tell me about the "JailBreak". Am I correct in that it somehow reprograms the iPod to use all software, not just the Apple stuff?

Well, I did it. A guy posted on CL about The Apple Store selling refurbs w/ warranties at discounts so I ordered a 16GB for $299 w/ free shipping; should be here in a few days.

I played with one yesterday at Best Buy and was pretty impressed. while AK wasn't all that sweet due to watered down graphics, Yahoo looked pretty good as did NFL.com. And the Johnny Cash YouTube picture was decent too. I'll flip my 30GB Video iPod to cover part of the cost, and may even sell the laptop if this satisfies my need for FREE mobile online access.

Update:

I've had my Touch less than a week and it is tremendous. While the smaller screen, compared to a laptop, takes some getting used to and the download/refresh rate isn't lightning fast, the convenience of having online access is wonderful. I've learned to add links for AK and other pages to my front page, so once I'm in wireless range I can just tap away.

The iTunes thing really is a non issue too. I just created a couple of smart playlists and sync to them. while it may not carry ALL my music, it certainly carries a LOT. The iPod is already on CL and I'm pretty sure I'll wind up flipping my laptop as all I really used it for was mobile online access and the Touch trumps it on portability.

I recommend it.

Just noticed this thread.

I, too, utilized the "Buy a Laptop, get an iPod Touch" offer when placing an order for a MacBook a few days ago: The MacBook took all of two (!) days to arrive from placing the order; I asked for engraving (free, too) of the Touch, so I am still waiting for it to arrive.

The 8Gb version (MSRP $299) is free with any qualified computer purchase, so I figured it was a no-brainer.

I will let you know what I think about it when I have messed with it, but the Internet connectivity as well as iTunes sync seem particularly attractive features.

Breaking News...

...to me, at least: The iPod Touch also supports Pandora (as does the iPhone), which means that I can:

  1. Listen to Pandora on headphones walking around the house, in the yard, in the garage, in front of my house (or anywhere with an Internet connection).
  2. Hook up the Touch to my stereo - that means I no longer need to hook up my laptop to play Pandora tunes.

Sounds pretty good to me!

I played with a friend's Touch for about an hour. The web browsing experience and resolution of the screen were outstanding.

I have not bought one yet, but I'm very tempted.

Another cool feature

Another cool thing is that you can use the touch as a remote for a music server. I believe if you have a computer hooked to your stereo there's some sort of software (still investigating) for the I-touch that lets you remote control the computer to play songs, organize playlists, etc.

Glad you like it Andy. I'm jealous:smoke: Bring it by sometime.

I have had mine for just over a month and it works great. It connects to my wireless router without a hitch. I love how the screen automatically switches from portrait mode to landscape mode when you rotate the iPod. Makes me want to get an iPhone.:D

Got mine today - very impressed. Love the Pandora plugin, and the fact that it connects to the Internet: Good for checking emails, but I probably wouldn't want to do a lot of typing (like posting on AK!) on the puny keyboard.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a dock for the Touch? I don't want anything with speakers - just for charging and with audio out. Apple Universal Dock, perhaps? :scratch2:
