Is $200 for a Denon DCD-1500ii appropriate?

No affiliation. I've been thinking of getting a good CD player, but this price seems a little high. What do you think?

High, I used to sell them. Nice machines but far from being one of the nicest Denons ever or being built like a tank. That would be the 3300/3520/3560 series. Even the 1520/60 and 2560 are far nicer as are many of the big Yamahas such as CDX-1100/1110/1120.

Also, very prone to skipping problems in my experience.

I bought one new in '85 for $550 and when CDR's came around they had big problems reading them. I found one at a thrift recently for $12 in mint condition, still skips. Sony ES is the way to go IMO. They read everything better than the Denon's.

$200 is way off base.

i have no clue about the denon Cd players, but i have a denon 1802 receiver i paid 72 bucks for.
I wouldn't buy it again. nice unit if you listen to only low volumes, but falls way short of my lower wattage yamaha r-v703.

i have a yamaha cdc902 cd player, it does like to skip alot on scratched cd's.
it was real bad when i first got it, but after i cleaned and moved the lens it does much better. still ships on certain cd's though.

my 902 doesnt like the random function much either.

Wow! When did the 1500II suddenly become nearly worthless? Seems to me it's been pretty highly regarded here for a long time. I always felt mine was pretty good. :yes: It must weigh 20lbs+.

Maybe I should hook mine up and see if it skips and won't play CD-Rs anymore. :scratch2:

Mine plays flawlessly and plays CD-Rs with no problem. It has quality build any CDP can envy. Double Burr-Brown 18bit DACs, 8X upsampling... and its transport is extremely well made in case you wish to use it with digital out to another DAC. It wights 28lbs. Sounds very smooth and detailed.

It scores 9 out of 10. Only problem is it was made in 1986 and today is 2012. It will not go on for another 25 years. Better buy a late 90s / early 00s CDP. Sony ES series, Philips/Marantz is the best choice.

I had one. looked and sounded great while it worked. When it came out, it was one of a few players that didn't sound Digital. They sudenly became undesirable now that their poor reliabillity is well documented. I do have one of their more recent DVD 1920 SACD/DVD Universal Players that I'm pleased with though.

First the door on mine malfunctioned, then the laser. I tossed it a month ago. Unless you can hear it play, and bring several disc's I'd pass. If it works...$50 tops knowing it's extreamly low realibility. My $80 Apex DVD Player is far more dependable with 2 -3x the hours on it.

Recently picked up a 1500II for $60. A little lube and cleaning, a new load belt and it's been playing great for several months. But $200.. nope.

Pass on it because it's priced too high, not because it's unreliable. After 25+ yrs. it's not unreasonable to expect to replace the belt, clean the lens, lube the mechanism. IIRC there are quite a few threads here about the 1500II and I don't remember any widespread reliability complaints.

I've got an Apex DVD player here that is so flimsy that the stiffness and weight of the cables tilts it without something heavy on top.

IIRC, I had one and part of the reason it weighed so much is that they welded a piece of 1/4" or so steel stock to the inside top of the cover!! I nearly flipped when I saw that. I always thought that was about as cheesy as it gets.

If you get a chance, pull yours, see if that's the case and let us know what it weighs. :yes:

$200 is too much. I believe the 1500 is preferred over the 1500II also.

That piece on the inside top doesn't add much weight but it does add mass to the metal so it doesn't vibrate so easily. I think most of the added weight is from the steel bottom plate they added. My 1500 doesn't have a metal bottom. I have one of each and prefer the 1500II. Super fast startup and track seek time due to the linear motor for the laser pickup. The 1500 has a DC motor, pulley, belt, and gear drive instead.

I own two 1500's and I have one remote (although I think it might be for a 1700). Paid $40 for one and $50 for the other one with the remote. Both work and play flawlessly and sound great. I have no complaints.
