is it worth replacing a Stanton 500 mk2 stylus?

A Stanton 500 mkii came with a recent turntable purchase. The D500 AL mk2 stylus is pretty much destroyed though.

I'm wondering if it's worth the money to buy a new stylus, or whether I should just call it a write-off

I think so. I have a NOS Pickering DE on my Stanton and it's a great inexpensive combination. It has a good "rock" sound that includes boomy bass. So also good for hip hop, rap, pop. I've also found it tracks really worn LPs better than my other cartridges. The D71EE is also a good elliptical for this cartridge.

You could also by an inexpensive stylus from ebay to fit it. The cart is good. I have a couple and like them.

I've had a Stanton L720EE (p-mount version of the 500mk.II) since I bought a used turntable about 10 years ago. (Using the 1/2" adapter, not p-mount, tracking at 1.5-2 grams.) Currently playing with a D71-2E stylus. Thought I wanted something better, thought the Ortofon 2m Red would be it. Played the Ortofon for a while, but plugged the Stanton back in. I think I prefer the Stanton. Stanton original stylii are no longer available. Just ordered two JICO aftermarket stylii from KAB USA. Another benefit of the Stanton is, the JICO stylii are $20 ea., the Ortofon are much much more and have a rep for not lasting long. Some other threads warn against Pfanstiehl replacements for Stanton cartridges. That's how I was steered to KAB USA and JICO. Most of the ebay listings are Pfanstiehl.

How have you liked the JICO styli for the Stanton?
4/25/13 - Received them recently, went to put them away, and discovered I already have two new D71EE (.4x.7) that I'd bought years ago and forgotten. Just changed out the D71-2E for a D71EE. Will save the JICOs for when I get through the OEMs.

It's a great cartridge, we still use them for broadcast use at the radio station. We have a stash of original new Stanton stylus for them as well and a few NIB 500 mkII's with stylus. I have them tracking at 2 grams in our Technics 1200 mkII's with absolutely no complaints from any DJ's. In our two broadcast studios we have EV Sentry 100A's suspended from the ceilings powered by Crown D75 power amps for monitoring cue & playback, those Stanton 500 mkII's work fine for all genres of music from Classical, Jazz, Blues, Rock, R&B, Folk and more to hip-hop.
