Is Luxman L-10 any good ?

Hi Folks !
Thanks a lot for the nice forums here, a pleasure to browse.
After lots of Sansui, Pioneers, Marantz, McIntosh etc. I've now been "offered" a set of Luxman L-10+T12 in mint condition, with owners manuals, org. box, serviced and all. BUT: I also once tryed a Luxman L-120A integra, that sounded very bad. On the other side a L-85v sounds very sweet to my ears, so my little question is, even though they'r all from the same periode aprox. 1975-80, how can they sound so very different ? The Beta-Duo things and the even newer models with "plasic" I don't like. Anyone knows of the L-10 integr. 2 x 55 w dual-mono ?

A pair just went on eBay for cheap. I was thinking of going for them for the heck of it after getting the Sonys for basically shipping but a timing conflict made me miss the closing bell.
 
I would think it would be worth a shot...looks like a really nice piece, definitely overbuilt. I'm a fan of pre-Alpine Luxman though, so I'm a bit biased. :)

This lower powered unit (compared to the L-11) was a top performer. The L-5 the basic integrated amp at 60wpc sold for $595. The L-10 with only 55wpc but dual powered with the two short toroidal transformers cost $795 for less features. All that extra went into sound and build quality. I would jump all over an L-10/T-12 combination. You are further enticed by the manuals, boxes and fully serviced units. The only thing not to like would be the price if it is too high.
 
Thanks for the inputs. Actually I think it is pre-Alpine, from 78 ? Price is 400 USD for the combo, with 1 year 100 % repair-warranty. If it's still there, I'll take it.

AU-999 vs Marantz or Luxman

How does an Luxman L-10 compare to a Marantz 4240 or 2275 or an Sansui AU-999. How rare is an L-10 in Europe and how much is reasonable to pay fo a unit i good condition?

Luxman amplifiers

I have over 200 receivers and amplifiers gone thru my house the last 25 years, I had found the Luxman build quality are better then Sansui, Pioneer ,and Kenwood. They also cost more then the othres in those days. The sound is a bit more tube like, but not so warm as to be dark. With the Luxman chassi, you don,t have to worry about cutting your fingers. They use the top electrictal components too. You will be happy with a Luxman product. Just make sure hey are not from the mid 80,s onward. Such as the likes of the R117,s, and the amps from that period. Very unreliable stuff.
 
I would be all over that, too, even at that price. It looks to be from about the time of my Luxman Laboratory Reference Series 5L-15 (shares some of the same casing detail work)...if it sounds anything at all like that, I imagine you'd like it. To be clear, I've never heard an L-10/t12 but I'd pay that just to have a chance to, after being so happy with the sound of my 5L-15. For the record, like you, I wasn't impressed with the Duo-beta (L480) unit I had, either.

I have never owned a R117 but there are many who sing its praises. What do you think about RX series? I have a RX-102 that I like, both for its looks and sound.

Three years has been a good amount of time to test this amp under many different conditions and with a range of turntables and speakers, I can now say that not only has this been an outstanding amp but it has also been reliable.

Im guessing your unit has upgraded DMLs in it then. Those can stop a number of Lux units. They have been reproduced but Hans might have run out and now there is an effort on ak to make some new replacements for the old black boxes. The open architecture units, both original Lux replacements and the Hans replacements are reliable.
