Is Marantz 22xx and 42xx the same?

I have been looking at recent posts of Marantz 22xx series. I have a 4270 that is currently out of rotation but reading these posts makes me want to put it back in. My question is whether the 42xx quadraphonic series is the same as the 22xx series sorta doubled, or were compromises made on the quadraphonic to get more stuff into the box? I guess I could compare stats but was wondering if anyone had units from both series or more insight into the question?

Some are similar in appearance but from what I've seen and worked on the quads are a totally different beast. There's alot more wiring, transistors, components doubled up than a 2 channel 22xx. With all that being said, the doubling effect leads to more that can go wrong. It also leads to a more complex unit to troubleshoot and work on. Sound wise I thought the quads were mediocre until I rebuilt my 4230, it is now my favourite medium powered receiver (less my 18) that I have heard. I think alot of these units benefit from a facelift no matter if it's a quad or twin.

The 4270 is no slouch, after all it is 70 watts in bridge mode and has amazing looks about it. However, the 2270 is just as nice but less complicated so in the end it would be easier to service if something were to wrong.

Been happy with mine

Got one several weeks ago free. Have it set up as my shop system and test amp. Works well in 4 channel with the "Mrs" no name two ways up front and a pr of Heathkits on the rear. Very sensitive FM with an outside ant. My Dual 1009 sounds good through it. Put it back in service...

I find little difference in the sound of the 22xx and 42xx.

As said, more than twice the amount of "stuff" crammed in the box, so they are a bear to work on compared to the 22xx.

I don't know for a fact, but I would think that running a 42xx in stereo is basically bridging the amps.

I have a few quads around here.
