Is my tape head ruined?

Hi everyone,

I was recently given a Fostex Model 80. Once I got it home I took a look at the rec/play tape head and it appears that one of the gaps is broken but I’m not sure. Does anyone know if this head is damaged beyond repair? If so what are my options for getting it replaced? Thank you!

Perhaps it at the end of its life. There is no reason to lap it even if gaps are not open. But there is a reason to service and restore those Fostex only if you need to transfer tapes previously recorded on them. Otherwise they are crap and this format is terrible.
 
hard to tell from the photos. If you want a better or clearer picture of the head condition you can remove the head block and send off to JRF magnetics. They can give you a professional view on the head life and condition of the head.

I was just given the machine, controller and mixer for free so I didn’t think it would hurt to fix them up and use them on a couple of songs. If you don’t recommend any of the Fostex 8-track machines then what do you think about the Tascam 38 and or 58?
