Is spray paint the next thing we're going to run short of?

I've been doing some speaker restorations lately, a pair of Infinity RS5s, and a pair of Advent 1s. For both these projects, I've needed some spray paint, but I've been finding a lot of stores have seriously reduced inventory.

I wanted to paint the baffles of the Infinity's, Home Depot were out of satin black, and Lowe's only had one can left. The Advents, I usually paint the baskets textured black, and both the stores mentioned were out of stock. This morning, I tried a Walmart and a different Lowe's, but neither had any in stock.

But it wasn't just these colors that were missing. Probably more than 10 different lines of spray paint were totally empty. Is spray paint the next thing we're going to run short of?

Spray paint is always hit or miss at the big box stores around here. If I need a certain color, I'll either order it, or go to a specialty paint store. But with the lack of trucking going on in this country, there is going to be intermittent shortages on most things for the foreseeable future.

I was disappointed to not be able to find BBQ potato chips at the local Gordon Food Service store today...

I second trying Ace. Went there yesterday for a couple of cans. The brand of flat black I was looking for was out but there were a couple other brands that had it. Shelves were full otherwise.

I work at Home Depot here in Canada and there are many things that are still hard to get from the manufacturers. They are all playing catch up after being shut down due to covid, in addition to that the retailers are ordering more than usual knowing people have been waiting and will buy them out when an order comes in. This will all straighten out over time as things get back to normal (omg will they ever?) hopefully the shelves will be full then. There are also issues for imports due to container ship logistics, then you have the hoarders that buy every item on the shelf and leave none for anyone else. Like we say at work "just another day in paradise"

I can't speak for the other stores, but I use Home Depot a lot and I've noticed that they have significantly reduced the paints (can and spray) that they used to stock all the time in stores (e.g. Rustoleum hammered paint in quart cans). The good (if inconvenient) news is that almost everything I've needed is still available if you order it "ship to store" from Home Depot online. Kind of a drag -- but it will be waiting for you in the store when you go to pick it up. You can obviously have them ship to your home, but there will be charge below a certain dollar amount.

There was plenty at our local hardware store last I checked. The Home Depot in Egg Harbor Twp. also had pretty full shelves of spray paint last time I looked.

Quoting myself because I withdraw the comment above. I just tried to do a Home Depot "ship to store" or "ship to home" for Rustoleum Hammered paint in quarts and it's not in stock anywhere (in stores or online). Also, I no longer see the "ship to store" option -- it only shows that 1 is in stock at a "nearby" store, so you have to go there. That store is not nearby, and usually when it says only 1 is in stock, they don't actually have any.

I can't find that hammered paint in quart cans anywhere else either (Lowe's, Amazon, etc). Don't know if this means Rustoleum no longer makes it or there is a genuine shortage like what OP is seeing with spray cans.

There's a couple places that have it -- the one below is from Amazon -- but they are gouging at $80 (normally $14) with a mid to late August delivery estimate!

I personally think for every Lowes there ought to be a Home Depot at the very least across town.
That would keep things interesting.

The kind of spray paint I am looking for is the textured kind that gives a "sandy" kind of feel. I know when I moved house, I threw away a bunch of spray paint rather than keep it. And 2x4s. And toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Might as well just burn the rest of my money...

Krinkle or Wrinkle (depends on the brand) paint was even hard to find several years ago when I refinished a tool box. I had to order it from an auto parts store. It worked beautifully though.

I’ve used a bunch of different wrinkle paints.

VHT’s winkle paint is really good and is available in red and black on Amazon for about $16. It takes some careful work to apply correctly, three somewhat heavy coats, I think 5 minutes between each. Sometimes need a hair dryer to help the wrinkling along, and then let it cure at least a week to be solid. It looks absolutely amazing when you get it right.

Plasticoat wrinkle is also good and has a finer wrinkle grain than VHT. Rustileum also makes a wrinkle paint, but it is not good. Love all the other Rustoleum spray paints, but not wrinkle.

I tried to do wrinkle powder coat with Eastwood’s powder gun, but it came out uneven - had to strip it and then use wrinkle paint. The powder coat was operator error on my part, nothing wrong with Eastwood’s product (but it’s not easy to get even)

I contacted Rustoleum support to find out whether the paint I was looking for (Rustoleum Hammered paint in quarts) was discontinued or just backlogged -- they responded within an hour or two that it is backlogged and should be available again in mid-August. Not the timeframe I was looking for, but good to know it will be back evenutally.

Might be worth contacting the manufacturer for whatever paint you're looking for. Which textured paint is it?

I tried another Lowe's today. The same can of black textured paint was sold out (or out of stock), right next to it they had a lot of the sand color.

I tried a Tru-Value on the way home, and bingo! They had it! It cost a little more than Home Depot or Lowe's, but at least I have it now.
