Is tape head degaussing a myth after all?

Actually the residual magnetism probably arises mostly just from the motion of tape in the path. There are plenty of magnetizable parts in the tape path.

Empirically, demagnetizing the tape path (not just the heads) will result in increased HF response and decreased background noise (hiss).

Basically he's full of it.
Why are you asking over here instead of over there...?

What I'd like is an electrical engineer (or someone similar) do either confirm or deny what he's saying about the DC and AC fields and such. But thanks.
