Is the AU-X1 a must have Sansui?

Probably one of the most demanding restorations if you are thinking long term. Get your power right and the grounding. I still haven’t installed the new power filters or new speaker terminals, maybe this winter. And the flat amp board wasn’t their best effort. It still stable as a Baptist preacher and just as glorious when driven by my better tube and solidstate preamps. There is just something about the sound that you don’t want to stop listening. I prefer it to my original 907 alpha, MR and NRA when driven by my Accuphase C-200v preamp. I did make some nice solid walnut side panels for it which really frame it up well

Update, I finally got the motivation to replace the 8 main power filters. Went with kemet 26,000 hour versions and upped the voltage to 100. They were almost identical, just a tad shorter. On mine, there was so much solder on the tabs it turned into a major project and my weller turned up to 750 degrees along with my 200 watt gun to effectively melt the solder. Had to use both at the same time, could have used another hand….

The originals all had good esr, but capacitance down 40% and on one, 60%. On power up, the mainline draw dropped a full 110mA. I swapped the labels to maintain original lookIMG_0094.jpeg

Have you changed the black caps? And the 33mf to 47? . i have to start mine and it’s a bit scaring.
Yes I changed them all to 500 volt MLCC’s murata. But I tested them all and none were bad. The power regulator board will be covered in glue and the centerpoint ground confirmed. The flat amp board DC offset set. Those are the first things I would address.

You can decouple the preamp and test the dc on the preamp outputs as well before sending a signal through the outputs.

The problem with mine was bad centerpoint ground so the regulated +/= voltage rails were all over the place which killed the dc offset at the flat amp board (dual jfet ic failure). Then cascading into the driver board and frying the outputs
 
I installed onsemi’s as SACRIFICIAL outputs while sorting everything out. Luckily I was able to find an original set of matched output boards, output transistors, and complete driver boards. Cost me a small fortune, but I have them. I also have a flat amp board which I have fully rebuilt
 
I hear your pain on desoldering. I had to change my big caps out on my X11. One of the caps failed and all were replaced. Big job for sure!
