Is this Craigslist special a decent buy?

eBay completed sales are $3-400.
For a local sale with issues, I'd want to be under $300. Given that it has been listed for a month it seems like the market agrees with me.
If it was really an easy fix with a $20 part the seller would have fixed it instead of trying to BS his way around it.

I got a bit more then his asking price for a fully functioning SL-1600, and that included the auto-cue mech which wasn't that hard to fix since it was just dried lube on the cam.

Either the part is broken or it needs to be disassembled and serviced ($$$). So it boils down to either he's being lazy or playing dumb and looking for a sucker that will buy his broken/partially functioning table at full boat price.

I'd offer a number that would cover your ass if it needs the service or replacement part.

When fully operational, its a lovely, tank of a table

Thanks for the response. I'm definitely new to this and I appreciate the help. One thing I'm wondering about is that digital display. With vintage stuff it seems like its often better to go simple than complicated since things will probably go wrong. Between the automatic features, the cue, and the digital display, how complicated/expensive are these types of things to fix, and are they typically fixable? Or have some parts/expertise fallen away over time?

Edit: I have no experience working on turntables, but I'm pretty handy and have tinkered with plenty of things, so I'm not afraid of attempting to fix stuff myself unless it is really over my head or could be seriously harmful to the table if done improperly
 
Main bearing lubricated....did he just pick the low hanging fruit and is leaving the rest to whoever might buy it?

If its anything like the 1600, which i'm sure it is, the mechanisms are all plastic with some metal parts. Getting the cover off from the top takes a bit of doing but one you expose the guts, its not hard. I

Print out the service manual and have lots of q-tips/denatured alcohol ready. I started out by cleaning each piece and lubing as i went. I only removed something if i had to. It was tedious but worked just fine.

Make sure you use a lube that is compatible with plastic. White lithium is safe but there are better alternatives out there.
