Is This Fixable!?

Okay, so long story short, there is a pair of Quantum 2's for sale and they are in fair to poor condition. I would love to buy them and fix them up IF they are fixable.

If you look at the 2 pictures attached, 3 of the binding posts on one crossover have been completely broken off. Not unscrewed, but broken off! Is this even repairable!? Also on the other crossover, 3 of the potentiometers are either broken off or missing. From the looks of the pictures, it looks like they are broken, but i could be wrong. What do you guys think!? Is it worth it or not!? He's wanting $500 and there is NO WAY i'd pay that, but if i could get him down to say $300, i think it would justify the expenses to fix them up. Any thoughts and insights are extemely appreciated... thanks! :)

Repairable.
It may be a bit troublesome finding 5 ohm 25 watt potentiometers available to match originals.

The stuff on the rear panel would be the least of my concerns. Verify that all of the EMITs work, and that both coils on each Watkins woofer have the appropriate resistance. If you have to start repairing those woofers or replacing EMITs, things will get expensive real fast.

The binding posts on the rear should be easy to find. I've seen ones very much like that. Worst case you need to enlarge the holes a little bit, or relocate the mounting screws. No biggie.

The pots might be a little harder to find. When I had RS 1.5s with bad pots, I cobbled together something with a higher value and put a high wattage resistor in parallel with it to get close. It worked fine. On those, if nothing else I think you can just bypass them, which means none of the drivers are attenuated. If they're too bright then turn down the midrange or treble controls so you can listen to them while you fine something suitable to replace them with.

If the Watkins woofers and EMITs are all working, then you should have $500 worth of drivers. If you can't fix them, you could part them out and at least break even. But it's obviously better to get the price a little lower, and lower still if you can't verify the drivers.

The real issue is the domes, if they have broken wires on the front, repair is difficult or expensive, and there are NO appropriate replacements. bshorey is right about the pots, there are very few pots that are the right physical size to fit in the crossover. He's right about the Watkins too, I had one go open on the 2 Ohm coil and it was unfixable. They are available on the 'bay but be forewarned there are two magnet structures and two cone types so finding an exact replacement can take time and patience. New ones are available but a pair is $750!!! The tweeters are USUALLY an easy fix, just reflow the solder buttons, there's a thread here all about how to do that. http://audiokarma.org/forums/index....ity-forum-from-the-experts-start-here.190448/

Bottom line, these speakers are in no way worth $500, I wouldn't pay $300 unless they are on your "bucket list"...

Binding posts aren't a real big deal to replace, the pots might be.
Some of the aftermarket replacement pots are much bigger than the originals.
Of course buying a pair of used crossovers off ebay or Barter Town could net all the parts you'd need to fix them.

As mentioned the Watkins woofers might be worth testing, not sure if there is any way other than checking both coils for resistance/continuity.
The round tweeters/domes sometimes have broken wires which need repair, a listening test will let you know those are working properly.

Top notch speakers.

Awesome, thanks guys!! I will see how low he will go, but i doubt he will budge that much. From what you guys have said, it looks like it'll be quite expensive to replace the pots and it's a 3 1/2 hour drive one way! So i'll let you know what he says. Thanks again!

Well, the guy wont negotiate price so it's a no go. Oh well, thanks for all your guys help anyway :)

I was wondering how it turned out.
Sorry it didn't work out.
Did you leave your contact info in case he changes his mind on price?
