Isoproyl alcohol

Old toothbrush works good on grim. For cigarette smoke Simple Green melts it. I start the cleaning process with my air compressor & a paint brush. Just be careful, things can go wrong fast.
 
Someone in the Marantz section told me he scrubs down dirty receivers with Windex and brushes in the garage floor. He then let's them dry for several days before proceeding with restoration. I was leery, but had a Marantz 2245 that I wanted to restore and that was filthy from years of apparent storage. I sat in the driveway with a full bottle of Windex and several brushes and scrubbed it good. I then gave it a light spraying rinse with -- the water hose. After 10-15 minutes of compressed air spraying every nook and cranny, I doused all switches and pots with multiple doses of Deoxit, and added Faderlube F5 for the pots. I gave it two days in a 120-130 degree garage to dry. Before the cleaning, there was sound from both channels that was about 70% noise and crackle. After just the cleaning, the sound was very good with very little noise. I am now recapping the unit, and it sounds wonderful so far. Don't let anybody tell you that you can't get a unit wet. BTW, The dirt cleaning likely has nothing to do with the extreme improvement in sound. I'm sure it is nearly 100% due to cleaning the controls.

Hey guys, the only problem I have with q-tips is the little strands of cotton left behind. In the unlikely event that something gets hot enough to turn those little cotton fibers into little carbon filaments we might have a short. Again unlikely, but I don't like to chance it. (After all I'm the most unlucky guy on the planet) I love the paint brush idea, I've been using a toothbrush for years, not anymore.
I've never been a big fan of deoxit it didn't seem to do any better than off the shelf contact cleaner and electronics lube. Not to mention a whole lot cheaper than deoxit. But to each their own
