Issue with a Sony DTC-59es DAT

Hello everyone.

I got for a few euros a Sony DTC 59ES DAT but it has an issue.

The mechanism seems to work (loading, playback, forward and rewind), but no sound comes out. The level meters do not move, the sampling frequency indicator flashes. The meter is running.

I tried cleaning the head both with a cleaning tape and a chamois with alcohol but nothing changed. Once or twice the device was thought to recognize a "start id" but that's all.

I dismantled the mecanism using this wonderful thread http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=184212 but didn't find any trouble.

With a 60mn tape (recorded in long play mode) instead of 120mn i have much more start id / sampling rate detections and meters sometimes move.

Any idea ?

Can you feel the head tips go past the chamois when you rotate the drum? If not, that's the problem, needs new heads...

Yes I can feel (and see) the heads.

The problem is solved, the RF amp located between the heads and the main board was dead.
