Issues Akai GXC-709D

Just scored a clean looking Akai GXC-709D cassette deck. The silver vintage version, circa 80's. powers up alright but playback stops after about 10 seconds as does FF and rewind. Counter isn't working and is stopped at 000. Related? Other possible solutions?

I have the same deck, real nice sounding but not quite up there with the GX912.

Love the VU meters, had my niece dancing to those meters. Hypnotized.

With this unit, the autostop mechanism is controlled by the index counter unit. If this counter doesn't move due to a belt failure or other reasons, the machine will automatically stop. Fix the index counter (replace the belt) and there you go!
