I was a junior in high school in 1972, living in Southern California. These aren't necessarily the albums I would pick as the best from that time period today, but they are the albums I remember listening to the most. I think I had most of them on 8 track, so I could listen to them while cruising in my Volkswagen. :)

John Lennon - Imagine - 1971
The Guess Who - Best of the Guess Who - 1971
Paul McCartney - Ram - 1970
Grass Roots - Their 16 Greatest Hits - 1971
Santana - Abraxas - 1970
Deep Purple - Machine Head -1972
Neil Diamond - Hot August Night 1972
Eagles - s/t - 1972
Carole King - Tapestry - 1971
Jim Croce - You Don’t Mess Around With Jim - 1972

My list is not from what I was listening to in 72, it is what I would have on my list if it were 1972.

So, you're looking for a list of ten favorite albums released in 1972 or prior, judging from today? That's lot of records to choose from! :scratch2:

Interpret any way you want. I was 6 in 1972 and not doing a lot of listening to music other than what came on the car radio.

Between working, taking care of my family and attending college full-time on the GI Bill, I never had much time to listen to music (or anything else).

Best Regards,

16 back then (in full blown discovery mode). IIRC, I listened to a lot of Floyd, Stones, Hawkwind, ELP, JA, etc., but Southern Rock was getting really big. Tucker, Outlaws, Poco, Allman Brothers....

It was my first stereo, how could I forget!I was 14 yrs old and had been shareing a bedroom with two bro's,Finally got my own room and the parents got me the stereo for my birthday, funny I remember my first 4-5 records but cant for the life of me remember the stereo eq,It was a new SS receiver and im leaning to a HK but just cant remember. It was bought at the local tv/stereo store in town tho.
Used to be mom yelling to turn it down, now its the wife...lol

I was 16. My parents bought me my first stereo for Christmas. It was an Eight Track boom box kind of thing. We played Steppenwolf "The Pusher" and Woodstock Live "The Fish Cheer". My father was not happy. He put his Perry Como records on his 6' long Magnavox console stereo and turned it up. Damn that was funny at time. He was probably about as mad as he was when I used my Johnny Seven OMA (One Many Army/1964) multipurpose toy rifle to shoot the balls off the Christmas tree. The rifle broke some time that night but I didn't break it.

Here is my 10 list:
The Beatles "Abbey Road"
The Rolling Stones "Let it Bleed"
Moody Blues "On the Threshold of a Dream"
Eagles
Jim Croce "You Don't Mess Around With Jim"
Crosby Stills Nash and Young "Deva Vu"
Eric Clapton "Layla"
Jim Hendrix "Are you Experienced?"
Led Zepplin "IV"
Stevie Wonder "Innervisions"

I wish there was more room.............

I'll only include those that were released in 72 (the year I turned 16).

The Allman Brothers Band, Eat a Peach
Steely Dan, Can't Buy a Thrill

Elton John, Honky Château
Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Trilogy
The Moody Blues,Seventh Sojourn

Now, if it was 1972 today, these are the albums released that year I'd be listening to knowing what I know now;

The Pentangle, Solomon's Seal
Le Orme, Uomo di pezza
Frank Zappa, Waka/Jawaka
Richard Thompson, Henry the Human Fly
Nick Drake, Pink Moon
The Rolling Stones, Exile on Main St.

Nice. I like the two lists.

Some of the lps on that second list, are groups I only discovered in the last ten years or so. Isn't it amazing how much great music is out there that we may never hear?

I'm too lazy to assemble a list, but i still listen to a helluva lot of the stuf y'all have been including in your lists, that and a lot of the same bands in the live setting from that era. Nice pick, gents. :thmbsp:
