It just feels so wrong.

For a long time, I've been running my tracking force at around 1.8 to 1.9 grams. It's been in the recommended range my Dynavector 10X4, Goldring Eroica, and Goldring 1042. Before that, I had Shure and AT cartridges that ran lighter than that. If I make any substantial changes in the force I can feel the difference in my hand. Now, I'm using a cartridge that has a recommended force of 2.0 to 2.5 grams, so I have it at 2.25. It just feels wrong. I still can't quite get used to the idea of letting this barbell down on the record. But so it is. At least it sounds good. :music:

Hey, some people use DL-103's at 3G or even an SC35c at 5g!!! I am a fan of lighter tracking cartridges, but I like my Stanotn D680ee at 2.5g. Very lively.

Too little tracking force will cause more damage if the stylus does not remain in contact with the groove. A stylus with not enough downforce will allow the stylus to bounce from groove wall to wall causing damage. If it is sounding good it is good. Which Rega are you using by the way?

heh, 2 grams as a "barbell". You'd absolutely lose it watching me toss stuff on my changer at work. It runs a smidge over 3 grams. I may have run it heavier but my tracking force gauge tops out at 3g. The stylus is rated for 3-7 gram usage.

i see rega still haven't sorted out that rear foot ...those 3 little isolation tabs are always more compressed than the front two..:D
great looking cartridge btw :thmbsp:

G'day all, yes I sympathise. It's like the difference between my M97xE at 1.25 grams and my AT95E's at 2 grams.

It took me a long while to get used to that. Even now, 2 grams is my upper limit! Regards, Felix aka catman.

I hope it's a decent changer...

Relative of the Garrard AT60. Its decent enough. If I was really concerned about it or the records I play on it, it would not be in the maintenance shop in a dusty warehouse.

Probably not what you want to hear but although the latest buzz on the forum about high tracking forces wants to dispel everything I learned thru the 70's and 80's about record wear but I'm still not convinced and just couldn't drop an arm with that much force on my favorite LPs no matter how good it sounds.

pressure per unit area is what counts....but I feel your pain. I have a Dual 1209 with a Stanton conical running at 2.5g for 45's. It feels like a bonecrusher.

The mind is playing tricks on you. As long as you are in the proper weight you don't have have any worries. Man that cart is really a looker! If you feel it's to heavy send her my way. JM you do know who Bob is don't you? he is our buddy from AR.

Feelings about whether it's right or wrong are totally irrelevant. You MUST track your cartridge according to the mfr's specs and recommendations. It may sound like a lot, but the cartridge is designed to track at that tracking force.
