About 6 weeks ago, I ran into an old colleague of mine. I had last seen him at a veteran of the company get together. He asked me if I was still into audio. I said I was and started enthusiastically talking about how much fun I was having doing it. We chatted a little bit, and then he asked me if I would be interested in a pair of Klipschorns. I asked him what he wanted for them, and said 2 or 3. I said I'll give you 4. I'd give you more but I couldn't afford to at this time of the year.
After I got home and started researching, I started to wonder if he had meant 2 or 3 thousand! I had been thinking of hundreds, but looking at prices, 2 or 3 thousand isn't out of the realm of reality for a pair of Klipschorns. I decided to go on the assumption he was thinking in terms of hundreds, and if I was wrong, we could start negotiating from there.
On Wednesday, I get a set of 4 pictures from him. And he asks me if I'm still in for $400? My first look, these look in pretty good shape! Then I think, wait! These aren't klipschorns! What are they? A quick look online, and I quickly realize they are Cornwalls! Series 1. I tell my buddy these aren't Klischorns, but are Cornwalls. He says sorry, old age. Make me an offer for them? I have to get them out. My new bride wants them gone! I tell him I'll have to think about it. And find out what my wife thinks.
I am so lucky my wife sees how good this hobby is for me, and for us. So we talk about it. I tell her about some of my research, measure if they will fit into the same place the Kef Concerto's sit, and they do. Just! I'm already pretty sure I want to get them, if only to try them out for a while. So I explain to my wife that these are big, but it seems they will fit. I show her the pictures and explain that is a 15 inch woofer in that box. I tell her we can try them out, and if we don't like them, we would have no problem moving them on, despite their size. So I make a lower offer, and he accepts. We'll pick them up on Saturday.
So today, my son and I went for a drive into the country to pick up the Cornwalls. They weren't as nice as the pictures made them look, and I think one of the badges was missing, but I didn't notice until the other badge started coming off. Then we checked the first and it was missing with no sign of it on the ground. We connected them up just for testing in the middle of the living room/dining room. The Cornwalls owned that centre area. But all drivers work and appear to be original.
So we pull out some furniture, remove the Kef Concerto's, and their stands. Move the sofa so we have room to move, and move these behemoths into place. Listening to them right now. So far I think they sound at least as good as the Kef Concerto's without the SPL limitations the concerto have. The lows seem to be comparable, and I'm driving them with a McIntosh MC2205 with a leestereo restored and optimized C26. The highs don't seem to be harsh like the Heresy's were, mind you I have better gear now as well. I haven't cranked them up yet. I need to wait for some alone time.
