It took me 40+ years but I finally did it!

I loaned out my shure m97xe to a friend...came back destroyed. That cartridge, which only has maybe 20 hours on it, is getting a JICO SAS.

I also was witness to a friend, drunk as hell, completely destroy an Empire needle (oem) but destroying the needle wasn't enough....later he lost the damn cartridge. It was one of the really nice ones, can't remember which.

So far, I've been quite lucky. :para::para:

the friend who destroyed my shure needle bought me another complete cartridge/needle. Another shure m97xe. :)

I'd never own a super high price cartridge for this very reason. In this case I think it might be a golden opportunity. IMHO the 20 or 30 is vastly better than the 10 if you're hooking anything even halfway decent to it.

I roached a DR500LC after getting to hear it just a couple of times, now I only play the big gun TT when I am feeling real steady. Glad to have a second TT for everyday use, that is for sure.

Can someone explain to me exactly how bad you have to whack a stylus to permanently damage it? I know I have bumped my M97xe a few times. Not severely, but it always bounces back, and it sounds fine to me. Would it still be considered "damaged"?

I've bumped, bounced and dropped my cartridges in the past with no obvious consequences, other than having a heart attack. Bending the stylus 90 degrees sideways was a different story. Most of my listening is with a DL-103, and I suspect it's a tough cartridge compared to others, low compliance 'n' all.

The proof is in the pudding: if you whack it and it still sounds good . . . In your case, if it "sounds fine," then you have no worries.

Adcom MC cart. I managed to break the stylus right off of the cart. always intended to see if I could get it fixed. The cart has long since disappered. I hadn't thought of it until I read this post

Never done it myself but an inquisitive 6 year old guest found his way to the basement in 1986 and snapped the cantilever off my prized Micro Seiki LC80W MC cart.
His mom said he had a TT just like it at home; you know the yellow plastic ones with orange plastic disks..... BITCH!

A friend of mine, who also has his share of turntables, brought over his young son, who suddenly exclaimed, "scratching!" and made a beeline for my main rig. Thankfully the father intercepted his boy just in time. I was sort of petrified, and have to give dad props for saving my system.

I bumped my DL-103 with an album cover and knocked out the left channel on the cartridge, so the whole thing was ruined.....expensive mistake.

Man, just WHAT IS IT about turntables, shiny knobs, and most of all, dust caps that attract children's little grimy fingers like moths to flame??:scratch2:

UncleAng,
I am sorry for your misfortune, but I had tell you that I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. Thanks for sharing!!

Wiping the years from my eyes,
Don

Gosh. A lot of sad stories. I've so far been fortunate, I think. One mistake was repaired at a shop and paid for by the friend who did it.

I got my fathers pl530 last week it had a shure m111he cart with n111he stylus from the time I removed it to realign it till when I put it back on I broke the tip off. wow what a bummer since they don't make that stylus anymore but I did find out that a n97xe stylus fits but it is still not the same. my dad said he bought it in the early 80's and it prob had 4 hours on it.
