About a month ago I purchased my first tube amps from a guy who was starting to clean out a storage locker. One of them that I ended up with was an amp that was still in its original box, with schematic, info and warranty card. Unfortunately, the box had become damp over the years and the base is somewhat rusted. The transformers had paper dust caps on them and look new. It's a Grommes Hi-Fidelity Model 221A monoblock from Feb 25, 1958 made by Precision Electronics, Inc. I didn't want to do anything with it until I got the variac. I started bringing it up slowly yesterday and just a little while ago hooked in my ipod and a Klipsch Heresy....and it sings beautifully
The tubes in it are two 12AU7, two 6L6GB and one 5U4GB. I like the shape of the 5U4GB - kind of a top hat. I've attached a pic of it sitting on our kitchen table all hooked up and playing beautifully. This makes me think about trying to find...or who knows...make another one so I've got stereo.
