Well, after almost a year of renovations, I have started unpacking my storage unit. It has been a little frustrating because my wife wants to take it slow, and I want to assemble my IKEA Jerker Desk and set up my two stereo systems, but I started bringing things in on Wednesday evening, and got to the speakers last night.
We are doing this really slow because we are still cleaning up all the drywall dust left around at the same time. I have already gone through the house with a shopvac with the drywall dust filter, and we have 2 air purifiers going strong, and I cleaned the furnace/air conditioner filter. However, all the cabinets have a layer of white powder inside them, so the contents need to be emptied and wiped down.
Regardless, I went ahead and brought in a bunch of speakers yesterday. My wife asked me why, and I said I need to figure out which speakers are going into the bedroom, and for the rest, I can't sell them if I don't have access to them!
For the moment, I only have access to a repaired during the renos Quad 33/303. However that should be quite suitable for this exercise. For the past month I have been using the Quad to drive my Cornwalls with a 200 Cd jukebox for the source. I'm not putting in my really good stuff until the dust cleaning is all done! The speakers I brought in from storage are; Genesis Physics IIs, Kef 103.2s, and EPI M100s. I brought a couple of other pairs in, but they are not contenders.
So this morning, I decided to put the Kef 103.2s onto stands and hook them up to the Quad. Oh my god! They sound better like that than the Cornwalls. It is probably the synergy between the Quad and the Kefs vs the synergy between the Quad and the Cornwalls, but I was quite impressed, especially when I turned up the volume after my wife went outside. My wife was also impressed, and likes the idea of the Kef 103.2s in the bedroom. I have a feeling the EPIs don't have a chance, and although the Genesis are my preferred choice, they are a little too large for their future home.
This is lots of fun! I get to take my time, experiment, and hear all kinds of new mixes of gear together! I'm hoping I will be able to get to the McIntosh MA-6200 soon, which is the amp I am planning on using in the bedroom. I have a custom made console custom made in 1959 I've been storing for about 10 years waiting for this day.
