It's raining KLH speakers at my place

No need to remove the terminal plate; you can do all the crossover work through the woofer hole. As far as the inductor, the Seventeen has a smaller woofer which is likely more comfortable playing in the midrange. In fact there are those who think it has the best midrange of all KLH two-ways, possibly because of the blending of the drivers. I wouldn't mess with it.

I worked on the crossover on my Sixes before and I couldn't have done it inside the box (even if it had removable woofers). I am concerned about working with a hot iron inside that small enclosed space. If it was a single cap I wouldn't be so concerned, but it isn't so simple. Also I'd like to get the box down to "just wood" and do a good clean job on it with sanding, filling, cleaning, sealing etc. That's all.

I've got two of the 17's stripped (rough stripping). Moving on to the other two which didn't have paint. I could sand those out, but my buddy is a bit of a details guy and wants the same treatment. He's buying the caps, so he gets a say in the project.

Just for fun... I've ordered inductors from Madisound. Gonna try the experiment just to see how they behave. I've got the measurement system (Measurement mic, software, resistor jig) to check the before and after frequency, impedance and phase responses. If I don't like the results I'll take them out and put them in the parts drawer for another project.

That should be interesting. I have an extra pair of inductors from some AR4Xs (another period speaker with an 8 inch woofer); if your Thirty Twos improve, I may do some goofing around with mine. I guess the trick is to overlap the frequency areas between the woofer and tweeter just enough.

Actually, I was only planning on the experiment with the 17's since the crossovers on the 17's would be identical to the Sixes if I add back the inductors. They are 0.4mh coils. (Actually the ones I ordered are 0.39mh 16awg). I'll discuss with my friend about modifying the 32's. They might already have an inductor. We opened them up about a week ago, but my memory is already gone about what was inside. I'll keep you posted on the 32's.

Ah, I get it. And I just checked a Thirty Two that I have apart, it has an inductor. Well, post results here anyway; I have Seventeens, too.

Yeah, I can confirm that the 32's have first order filters on both the tweeter and woofer. I.e. An inductor on the woofer and a capacitor on the tweeter. Would a second order filter be better? Maybe, but I probably won't try it on the initial refurb of the 32's.
