It's Raining Reel To Reels

In the past 10 days I have been given or picked up 8 reel to reels. Some good, some.....

1. Teac A-3340S
2. Ampex 767 - pair
3. Revere T-2200
4. Concord 107
5. TDC 130
6. Sony TC-560
7. Sony TC-200 - not shown
8. Revere T-200 - not shown

I like the Concord and the Revere.

The 3340 is the clear gem in the lot.

My Dad had an Ampex 767 when I was growing-up. I can tell you from experience that those units are going to be sticky messes inside. They are also very heavy. Did they come complete with the matching speakers?

x2 on the Teac. I'd think the Ampexes would be #2 on the list of keepers, provided you can get one good deck between the two of them. TDC is a new name on me - looks almost professional.

I agree the Teac is the best of the bunch. It was wrapped in plastic when I picked it up. Hasn't been used in a few years but was stored in a clean dry place.

The Ampex 767's came with the covers and matching speakers. The speakers are 2 cube shaped and fit in the back of the unit. Unfortunately, the microphones were missing.

I never have seen a TDC and there is a plastic pull up cover that hides the front when not in use.

The Revere T-2200 is stereo and a nice unit.

The Concord is in mint condition.

My back is hurting from all this lifting.

TDC= Three Dimension Company. They were best known for Stereo (3 dimensional) camera equipment for making 3D slides. Revere was originally also a camera company and later on a division of 3M Company along with Wollensak. Both of those machines are 1950's-1960's vintage machines. Both Ampex machines were single motor decks with many belts off of that motor. Good sounding decks with low flutter but mechanically challenging to repair. Warmack Distributing has parts for them. the TDC looks like some of my language lab decks.
th sony looks like a tidy little domestic unit, a bit like the TC270 I saved recently from the tip, that even has 1 7/8 ips quarter track stereo, it is a keeper as it is handy for transfersn and the odd ultra-long recording!

The 3340 is my all-time favorite. I also like the Sony portable.

+3 on the 3340S! I gave mine to my dad as he has a A2300S bought new in 1976, and it doesn't support 10" reels. It also does not have DBX noise reduction. I kept my X1000 only for this reason. Outboard DBX units can be added to either unit easily with excellent results, and are readily available used.

The 3340S is IMO Teac's best Pro-Sumer deck from the standpont of durability, quality, flexibility, and ease of repair. Sound recording and reproduction are also excellent.

More Kudos to Teac for keeping up the supply of replacement parts for their machines. Most items that are scarce on other decks are still made for Teac's again IMO. That's why I prefer them to other company's that are available, although there are certainly other units I lust after (Revox, Tandberg, etc.)
