Hi Guys,

I've been using iTunes to wirelessly stream my ripped CDs (Apple Lossless format) for years. Have been interested in getting into music files with higher resolution than 16/44.1, but Apple iDevices (iPods, AppleTVs, Airport Expresses) don't support playing higher resolution files as far I can tell.

This is the album that has specifically peaked my interest. https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=catalogdetail&valbum_code=HD090368035264

Just read about the Squeezebox Touch (again) today. It is supposed to work with iTunes to stream/play higher than 16/44.1 resolution files up to a limit of 24/96 resolution.

Are any of you using iTunes to store >16/44.1 resolution FLAC files and stream them wirelessly to a Squeezebox Touch? If yes, please share your experiences (e.g., pros/cons, limitations, etc.).

Am thinking a Squeezebox Touch may be the idea I give the wife for a Christmas present.

Thanks,
Scott

Windows PC. J River media player will handle FLAC files. I'm on the fence about this product myself, as I need to use iTunes to sync with files from eMusic. $49, 1 month full function trial to download.

WinAmp has a patch to handle FLAC files. I use an older version, don't like the newer interface. Shareware.

I know there are others for Windows, I don't use them. I am an old DOS/Mainframe person that doesn't like change. :D

Mac. There are a slew of third party products that handle FLAC files. Latest issue of Absolute Sound reviews them all.

well, the Touch will essentially stream the hi-rez files directly off the HD, assuming you have installed the Squeezebox software onto the network computer that the HD is attached to. you don't need iTunes or any other 3rd party software for actual playback of FLACs or other files.

i have had no problems with bandwidth on hi-rez files, but my wireless router isn't far from the Touch and that helps. the server software will even downsample 192/24 files to 96/24 on the fly, and it does just fine at this.

Thanks guys. Plan to have a Squeezebox Touch by Christmas time so I can stream hi-rez files to an outboards DAC and my two channel system.

Well, I use my HRT DAC with my laptop using Foobar as my audio-player and Windows Media-Player as my video-player (VLC as my backup for anything that WMP can't play), and this setup works great (and you probably already know how I feel about that HRT MSII, which does both 16 and 24-bit playback and sample-rates up to 96khz). Great, low-cost audiophile setup. Something to consider.

The Squeezebox Touch arrived today. Wow was this thing easy to set up!!! I was up and running with the Squeezebox server software running on my mancave PC in less than 30 minutes. Streamed 24/96 HDTracks files to it immediately and King Crimson's 40th anniversary Discipline cd from iTunes next. Flawless streaming to the den on the next floor up!!

Downloaded the free Logitech Squeezebox app for my iPod Touch and now I have full control of the music from my easy chair.

If you already have a wireless network in your house and are storing your music on a PC, I highly recommend you by yourself a Squeezebox Touch for Christmas. :music:

My house with wireless via an Apple airport, and my mancave are in two different locations. :(

I'd be interested in your impressions of the Touch's on-board DAC vs your external unit.
